    I recently purchased a used Roland tr-505. Yesterday it did a very
    strange thing. One of the sounds, the handclap, refuses to be heard.
    The problem doesn't seem to be in the button. I can select patterns
    with it and use it to program. But when I press the button after
    power-up or any other time when the buttons are supposed to produce
    sound (as opposed to selecting things), there is no handclap sound,
    just silence (the other buttons produce their normal sounds). When
    playing a pattern that uses the handclap, again all the other sounds
    work fine, but the handclap will not be produced even though I can
    bring up the pattern assigned to it (you know, those little dots
    representing the parts of the beat a sound is to be triggered on).
    So the button itself seems to work fine but the sound producing
    mechanism seems to be failing. Has anyone had a similar problem?
    Is it possible for only part of a sound chip to fail? Any suggestions
    on how to find the problem and fix it? And as a last resort, how
    much do you think it will cost to get it repaired?

	Jim, This may seem a bit simple, but having hacked with a friend's TR-505 a number of times, might you have the volume of the handclap set to zero?? If memory serves me correctly, and it rarely does, you can set individual levels on the 505. As for part of a chip failing, ANY type of failure is possible, albeit unlikely. dp

	Sounds like Dave's on the right track. If it isn't a "cockpit problem" (inherited or otherwise), there's always the possibility of a broken connection - I'd guess there's a separate connection somewhere inside for each voice. len.

	I had my own strange problem with a TR505 recently. I was trying to sync it to the sequencer in my Mirage and couldn't get it to work correctly. I had the MIDI OUT jack of the TR505 connected to the MIDI IN jack of the Ensoniq. I set the Ensoniq to accept external clock signal. I pushed the button on the TR505 and the two started together (first downbeat was cool...) but they went off after that like they were going at two different tempos. Could they have different clock resolutions? If so. How do I alter the TR505's?..the Ensoniq's?...Can it even be done??? (I see nothing about it in the Ensoniq manual and I have no manual for the TR505). I know this is off the main subject of this topic, and if someone can direct me to an answer in another topic let me know. Any help will bw appreciated. Mike D

	Well, the problem turned out to be the volume. Thank heaven for this notes file. I'm beginning to wonder if I could ever live without it. Part of the problem is that I've never had experience with a drum machine before and I got this one only recently so I've not had time to become truly aquainted with it yet. I think a bigger part of the problem is that it worked fine in the morning and then began "malfunctioning" in the afternoon. As far as I could tell, nothing happened to it inbetween. I'm beginning to believe that one of my friends was playing it whilst I was in the shower (using the famous "Lets press random buttons" method). Thanks for the help (my ulcer thanks you too!!) Jim
