I posted this is the 'Guitar' notes, then realized it might
be good for Commusic too.
Casio's newest Midi guitar is in the stores...it is the same
guitar as the MG-510, but it includes an ON BOARD SYNTH. It
may sound corny at first, but when you pick this thing up,
plug it into an ordinary amp, and can start playing synth
sounds (no unpleasant midi cords, folks) as well as straight
guitar, well, I fell in love with it. The model number is
the PG-380. The on-board synth is the new VZ-1 (which isn't
even in the stores yet). It has 64 pre-sets plus room for
a ROM card that holds more sounds.
I thought it tracked extremely well, and it can be set for
each individual's playing style. It's expensive ($1499 list),
and my dealer was asking $1100 for it. That will come down,
I'm sure. But compare that price with most other midi guitars
without the on board sounds.
Supposedly, there is an advantage in the pitch to midi time
involved 'cause the unit is on board. I can't explain it
technically, but it was better than anything I've played.
You HAVE to try this baby out, just for the fun of it!

Regular guitar as well, eh? Sounds like a tracker. I've played dozens
of trackers and none seemed adequate to me. If it's not using MIDI
in any way, the performance could be improved, but you also could
not record to a sequencer with it. With MIDI, you are not allowed
to guess. This slows down the tracking because it has to wait until
it is sure what the note is. Without MIDI, you're allowed to make
a guess and quickly modify it some short time later. The advantage
isn't that the synth is on board, the advantage is that it is not
force fit through MIDI. Sorry, I keep thinking of what kind of real
guitar I could buy with that much money . . .

Sounds good, but there's no way to edit the sounds without buying
a vz-1. I had a choice of the PG-380 or a mg-510 and a multi timral
synth and I took the latter. With the MG-510 I was able to get a
different sound on each string (ferry eenteresting) or diffeerent
tunings without tuning the strings.I use a Yamaha TX81Z and use
the note shift funtion on the Midi channel(string) I want to retune.
The latest prices in N.Y.C. for the PG-380 are approx. $980. For
the MG-380..$580...For the TX81Z...$380
