1311.0. "Looking for intoductory MIDI book or course" by BOHR::CASSONE (Dom Cassone UPO1-3 DTN 296-4797) Tue Apr 12 1988 12:23

My wife and I are about to take the plunge into the wonderful world
of MIDI. We are looking for a few good books or a course that will
teach us the basics of MIDI, electronic keyboards, synths etc.

Does anyone out there have any recommendations for good material
that includes the basics of using MIDI keyboards, sequenceers, PCs
    and anything else?

    Thanks,
    Dom

1311.1What? Another MIDIot in UPO!!! I been saved!!!!JAWS::COTEStompin' down the avenue...Tue Apr 12 1988 12:3012
There are lots of books and stuff out there (a 3 volume soft-cover
set from the publishers of Keyboard comes to mind) but the state
of the art is changing so rapidly that the books become dated in
    no time.

Getting a subscription to Keyboard or Electronic Musician would
be a good place to start.

(So would walking across the parking lot to UPO2-3 and introducing
    yourself.)

MICROSOFT press recently put out a book called MAKING MUSIC WITH
MIDI (or something close to that), and it discusses various options,
as well as describing what MIDI is, and it's various pieces. It
also has the Current MIDI spec in it. It's got a blue cover & a
picture of a Violin in front of a Casio CZ-101 synth. It costs around
$22.00, but, I feel it was a good investment. It went into the set
ups that 3 different MIDI musicians had, and considered thier
perspective (Macintosh & C64 are two of the 3). I lent it to my
keyboard player & now the two of us are able to work towards some
of our goals more effectively (neither of us had used much MIDI
stuff until this year). I'm sure that there is lots of other stuff
to pick from also. I got mine at a book store.

Union Music in Worcester, and E.U. Wurlitzer also in Worcester, both
have a number of books on MIDI. I suggest that you look thru them and
ask Jeff at Union or Eddie at Wurly which book they might recommend.
