1258.0. "Wanted: Right-angle MIDI cord" by 57412::EATOND () Wed Mar 16 1988 12:14

	Anyone ever seen a 'right-angle' midi cord? I have one piece of rack
gear that connects at the top. I've been able towork it out so that it has
a little short of an inch of clearance.

	Anyone have one they wanna sell? Anyone know where to buy one?

	Dan

	P.S. I have thought of making one, as I found a place that can sell me
a right angle connector.

    Come on now -- we've got people in this conference reverse-engineering
    ESQ1's, coding up PDP-11's to produce every conceivable musical
    form...we almost have someone sending a tape across the Atlantic
    AND YOU LACK CONFIDENCE IN MAKING A MIDI LEAD?

    I've got one with a 90 on one end and a straight on the other. It
    might be 2-3 feet long.

    I'll trade you even for one of equal or better length.

	Sounds just right. Can you check how much clearance it needs (I have
about an inch of play) and bring it in tomorrow? I'll bring one in and drive
down tomorrow, if you're free.

    It should fit it an inch of clearance, once it's inserted....

    re .3	Is yours a right or a left angled one ?

	Good point! I'll have to check on that tonight. I would assume,
offhand, that the shield positioning index should be on the same side as the
direction the cords vears off in;

    Hmmm sounds like you might consider a LERDS-BIM socket-rotating
    adaptor. Originally designed to provide a 180 degree rotation
    of your MIDI ports, it sounds like a market opportunity exists for
    a 90 degree variety.

1258.10Another solution - probably notDREGS::BLICKSTEINMIDI DJWed Mar 16 1988 16:437
    I'm not sure if I understand the exact nature of the clearance problem
    but I've had problems with cords that stick too far out the back.

    I've solved them by putting some washers on the screws that mount
    it into the rack.

RE < Note 1258.10 by DREGS::BLICKSTEIN "MIDI DJ" >

	No, this unit is a drum module that normally lays flat (so that the
jacks go out the back), but, when the the rack-adapters are used, the jacks
face up toward the top of the rack.

    re .7	Mine's that way, i.e. it hangs down (doesn't everybody's ?)

    Its the one coming out of my KX 88, so I'm using it, but could swap
    if your need is greater than mine (which it seems to be.

	STOP THE PRESSES! I was wrong about the direction of the cord. I ran
home at lunch and pulled the unit out of the rack. As it turns out, the
previous diagram is the only way it WON'T work (insert embarrassed grin).

1258.21Oh, gosh, what can I buy now?AKOV88::EATONDTue Mar 29 1988 17:2711
	Just to relieve those of you who've been laying awake nights wondering
what I'll do...   8^)

	I decided that too much of the rack was being monopolized by the drum
unit (it takes 5 spaces!), so I found an old rack-mountable shelf drawer that
was previously too deep for my rack, cut off the excess, and now can lay the
unit down flat in the rack. It takes up two spaces now. Which means I have
three spaces to fill...
