1254.0. "Casio CZ5000 MIDI Looping Question" by AQUA::ROST (Tush, tush, you lose your push) Tue Mar 15 1988 14:03

I don't suppose there are a lot of CZ-5000 owners out there, but
    here goes anyway....

The CZ-5000 has four "modes" , normal, tone mix (layer), key split
and sequencer. In each mode, the MIDI send/receive channels can
    be specified.

OK, the CZ sequencer defaults track to MIDI channel, i.e. track 1
sends on channel one, track 2 on channel two, etc. The send channel
that can be selected relates to the keyboard itself, being used
    as a controller.

Now, in "normal" mode (for regular real-time playing) you can patch
MIDI out to in and with send/rec channels set the same, you can
get "doubling".....four notes local and four notes via MIDI ;this
can be used to simulate a short (like maybe 5-10ms) digital delay
    setting.

However, this does not seem to work in sequencer mode. Nor can I
get the sequencer on any given track to drive the CZ through the
external loop. So, it seems, that the receive channel assignment
in sequencer mode is totally useless (5000 owners may already suspect
why I'm attempting such a bizarre configuration).

The manual, interestingly, has lotsa pictures of the CZ as a master
controller/sequencer in a MIDI setup but conveniently omits any
configuration receiving external MIDI signals while running the
    sequencer.

So (pant, pant) any 5000 owners got any insights for me???

Non CZ owners may feel free to suggest buying a synth with a more
    sensible MIDI interface 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^)

I got this reply over USENET, may be of interest to other CZ-5000
owners (I know there's at least *two* of you out there)

Okay, here's what I've found out, from both reading the MIDI specs
in the manual and by hooking the beast into other synths...

When in sequencer mode, the board _cannot_ recieve note-on/note-off
commands via MIDI. Period. I don't know why...obviously Casio felt
we couldn't handle routing external note data around the sequencer...

I think this probably stems from the fact that Casio(like many
other synth companys) expects us to hook together _mostly_ pure
Casio stuff. And from what I've seen of the Casio line (CZ-1, CZ-101,my
CZ-5000, the mini-key mongo drum synth whose code letters escape me
at this point), the 5000 was designed to be a controller, with the 101
and drum synth hung onto it for extra noises and drum stuff. (A friend
of mine owns the drum synth and I was able to borrow it from her for a
few days for such an experiment...the two boards, as I expected, worked
beautifully together). Therefore, with the sequencer controlling the gig,
there would be no logical place(in Casio's mind) for note data to be coming
from, except from the live part played on the 5000 itself.

This does suck a bit, as I've had visions of hooking one of those guitar-like
hang over your shoulder controllerss into the Casio and playing the electric
guitar preset(which I happen to like a great deal) while the sequencer
bangs out the bass and perc. Sigh. I guess not.

Well, I can't speak for you, but I was able to pick up my board for a very
good price. ($560, floor demo, list $1300) Some of you might be cringing at
the thought, but heck...it was (and still is) in perfect shape.
