I think you know this but just in case... The opposite of OMNI mode
is not POLY mode, it's OMNI OFF.
4 modes were spec'd...
OMNI ON - MONO
OMNI ON - POLY
OMNI OFF - MONO
OMNI OFF - POLY
The MONO/POLY qualifier related to the degree of polyphony, MONO
equaling 1 note, and poly equaling >1.
What you finally got into was OMNI OFF - POLY.
The Mirage will support MONO mode.

| I think Omni mode is sorta for the people who don't wanna know from
MIDI channels. They just wanna hook up their CZ's to their whatevers
and just have it work.
I know some devices always power up in Omni mode for this reason.

1250.3 | I use it frequently (but it is of small value). | BOLT::BAILEY | Steph (stef') Bailey | Mon Mar 14 1988 17:07 | 9 |
| If you have a bunch of gear down stream in your midi chain, and
you just want to play around with it (as opposed to playing a sequence,
or whatnot) you can put the synths in OMNI and not disturb your
channel assignments (or at least I can on my synths).
This allows me to work up wicked bitchin' massive stacks, and then
play my sequences without much hassle.

| OMNI ON - POLY is for, when receiving from a controller that xmits
two MIDI channels at once (like a KX88), cutting your polyphony in
half.

Why in the world would anyone want to do that?
(Is this because you cannot control the MIDI channels from the KX88?)
Puzzled??

This is, like, sardonic humor. I know how to control the MIDI channels
from the KX88. I mustv'e forgotten the winky face again.

| I think OMNI mode reflects two desires, one possibly useful, one
probably obsolete:
1) it makes it possible for synth manufacturers to ignore the
channel number and just play the notes. Maybe somebody who
didn't know about VLSI and microcode thought it would make
synths cheaper. This is not really a valid reason any more.
2) the stuff everybody's already said about nobrain users who
donwannano from channels. This is useful, I guess, but if
I want to do something like this is just run everybody on
channel one. It's as much work to get all the synths into
OMNI mode as it is to set them all to channel 1.

| I use the omni mode in the TZ all the time. It allows me to diddle
with a patch from the keyboard or the sequencer without having to
reassign midi channels.
