There is a brief description of the DX-11 in this months Sound On Sound
mag (Feb 88) [This is a UK publication - I don't know if it's available
in the rest of the world]. It has the following spec:
61-note, 8 voice polyphonic, *multi-timbral* (a first for a Yamaha
keyboard), 4-operator voicing (similar to the TX81Z - the photo of it
has a button clearly marked 'Wave' in the Operator section), 224 sounds
(128 preset, 32 internal, 64 on cartridge).
New features include a pan effect which can be controlled by key velocity
and key split positions, a delay mode (MIDI rather than digital I guess)
and Chord Set, which allows you to program a chord and then just use one
key to play it (very Casio !). This is the first Yamaha product to feature
Quick Editing, where you can edit sounds in terms of 'Brilliance', 'Attack'
etc.
No price was given in the article, so your guess is as bad as mine !
I hope this info is interesting - sorry I couldn't find more detail.

In April's edition of 'International Musician' one of the advertisers
was listing the DX II at 650:00 ( I can't remember which advertiser it was as
my brother has nicked the magazine! ).
However, some advertisers are notorious for announcing an item before
getting deliveries.
Anybody have any further info????

Re 0 and -1 and the net
They had a DxII in my local shop this weekend so if you`can get
them in Manchester they myst be availbe in the rest of the U.K.
As to the price . Well now you know why we in the U.K. got the Hr16
first. Because we pay more. This has always been a feature of the
price of being a music lover in the U.K. I can remember when Strats
were parity pound for dollar and the pound stood at $3:00.
Oh well it's only rock and roll ! etc. etc.

Sorry I didn't ask as one of these is not on my list. However I
have s special relationship with this shop that says I can usually
get a good price. Mail me if you want me to find out.

1191.8 | DX11 at Daddy's | FGVAXZ::MASHIA | Crescent City Kid | Thu Mar 24 1988 18:00 | 6 |
| I saw/diddled with a DX11 in Daddy's (Salem, NH) at lunchtime today.
So they are available. Don't remember the price, $700-$800 range.
I'm not a keyboard player, so I couldn't really evaluate it.

1191.9 | I got one now! | AYOV16::ABELSEY | Delusions of adequecy | Sun Mar 27 1988 09:11 | 33 |

All mystery is over as last weekend I purchased a DX11 (it is
"eleven", not "two"). Got it for 599:00 in Glasgow although no doubt it will
sell for much less elsewhere in a couple of months time (as always!).
I am really impressed with the sounds (the presets are good but there
is some ridiculous ones in there - TOY PIANO springs to mind). The PERFORMANCE
mode is very easy to program and use and produces some classic multi-timbral
noises.
The thing that impressed me most about the DX11 is the velocity
performance of the keyboard. It has a much better response than my Akai MX73
master keyboard. You can really hit the keys on the DX11 and you still get
more velocity response (compared with the MX73's keys full velocity output at
a mere firm touch). The user definable KEY VELOCITY parameter in the DX is
much more useable than the MX73/DX21 setup I used before.
To continue to sing the '11s praises, the midi implementation is
really good compared with the DX21/27. The incoming program changes to the
DX11 can assert the normal programs (e.g. incoming 1 :== internal mem
1, incoming 2 :== internal mem 2, etc) or it can index through a
user-definable program change table that *can* include PERFORMANCE program
numbers or even cartridge numbers.
I have used the beast in two gigs now and I and the rest of the band
am impressed with the sound. Thank God that they have a backlit LCD for dark
stage program changes.
Anyway, anybody else got one (Europe or 'States)? Or does anybody want
to know more about it?

| Yep -- I'd like to know how you got on setting up new patches.
Paul Kent has an FB01 that he's diddled with, and he's got some
great sounds out of it. I tried a DX11, and I guessed that it was
similarly open to tweeking if and when appropriate.
I thought it was a great looking synth, too -- all keys and no fancy
bits.

1191.11 | Patches/editing | AYOV16::ABELSEY | Delusions of adequecy | Sun May 01 1988 11:02 | 30 |
|
I copied some of my original (?) patches across from my DX21 to the
'11 via MIDI and twiddled with some of the new features in the '11; e.g. the
different waveforms available as opposed to the sinewave in the '21.
It is fairly easy to edit patches in the '11; the parameters are just
a superset of the DX21/27 parameters. Some editing sequences are NOT
documented in the manual, however. The one that springs to mind is changing
the operator frequency from RATIO to FIXED. This can only be done when first
entering the EDIT mode and can't be achieved after you have set up other
parameters. However, you can just exit into single mode and back into edit
mode to change the operator.
The PERFORMANCE mode edit is very similar to the voice edit mode with
the parameters written on the bottom of the top row of keys. A lot of
excellent performance patches can be created with the ROM voices; adding your
own voice patches increases the performance possibilities exponentially! A
small grip here is that the person that done the artwork for the front panel
of the DX11 should be immediately fired as the spelling is terrible - e.g.
OUTPUT ASSSIGN, MODULATION WHELL (a new MIDI contoller?).
Unfortunately, I don't have much time for programming the DX11 and,
consequently, would like to know if any of you know of a source (preferably
tape-based) of patches for the DX11/TX81Z? I'm willing to mail any of my
patches to anyone wanting them (sorry, it will have to be via the written word
- as in programming sheets) - any takers (or givers)?
Andy B.

| Well, I don't think that Yamaha would mind if one of us TZ owners
shuttled you a tape of a voice dump, not that you'd really want
it. I'm in the camp that is waiting for Yamaha to publicly release
the DX11 patches to us TZ owners ...

| Not that it matters or anything, but the local hole in the floor music
store has (of all things) a DX-11 on display, complete with the hot
factory patches (I heard it the other day and was quite impressed).
The next time I head down there to beg some patches I guess I could get
a BULKDUMP or two of this beastie. You have any way of restoring a
SYSEX dump?

1191.15 | A good performance keyboard, then | HEART::MACHIN | | Wed May 04 1988 13:27 | 15 |
| I was immediately impressed with the facility to create two to four
voice stacks on each note in a scale, individually. So, for example,
you could harmonise minor thirds for fast two-part lead lines (that
'Garden Party' tune by the Icelandic band whose name I've forgotten).
But I didn't get chance in the shop to set the thing up.
By the way, I rang Soho Soundhouse for a price on the DX11, and
they said they couldn't give me a price on the phone, but if I turned
up with cash they guaranteed I'd be pleasantly surprised. (Mugged,
more like).
Is this note-stacking business available on the latest DX7-types?
Richard.

No. That is a TX81Z/DX11 feature only. (Usual excuses about ``if
you had an appropriate PC program, you could do it easily with MIDI''
apply...)

| Re .17: Nope -- the special bit is in the setting of the interval
between voices (varying it + or - a semitone, for example). It really
is an effective feature if you can pull it off -- double lead-lines,
a minor seventh apart -- cries of 'How does he do it?' etc.

Lemme know.
It's my first "real" synth. All I had before was a CZ101, which
I still have and like, but the DX11 is very nice. I actually fell
in love with the D50 (I'm a big fan of "lush" sounds), but had not
enough bux. But I've been very happy with the '11 so far. And my
two year old loves the sound effect patches.
I've even gone out and bought an "adult beginner" piano book! :-)

Note 2782.0 Yamaha DX-11, and FM synthesis in general No replies
FRUST::HAMILTON 43 lines 4-DEC-1991 05:42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought a used Yamaha DX-11 Synthisizer/Keyboard about
3 years ago, but have just begun seriously using it in
the last 3 months or so. I'm now beginning to realize
how little the owner's manual conveys beyond the bare
rudiments of knowledge necessary to really get full use
out of this product.
Can anybody point me to:
Good books on Synth's in general so I can find
out what all those features are good for.
Information on the Yamaha FM series of Synth's
so I can become better at creating my own
patches. (DX-7, 11 etc..). I've read notes
993, 1191,1182 & 1455.
A good mail order source for accessories for
this instrument.
So far I've been using the Yamaha in conjunction with
the Dr. T's KCS Level II Sequencer on my Commodore Am-
iga 500 computer. The software side of the issue is
rapidly becomming less of a problem because of the gen-
erally execellent nature of the documentation for the
sequencer. The hardware side is another thing entirely.
I live in Germany which means I'am cut off from many of
the traditional sources of information (bookstores,
magazine racks, knowledgable dealers, etc.) that I
normally would have access to in the U.S.
In return I would be willing to offer advice on seq-
uencing to nay interested party.
Regards,
Scott
.
