1182.1 | An '81Z + keyboard | FGVAXZ::MASHIA | Crescent City Kid | Mon Feb 01 1988 16:28 | 9 |
| I put a reply in another topic about the new DX (and I think it's
called a DX-II("two", not DX-11("eleven") ). There was some mention
of it in one of the music rags. As I recall, it is essentially a
TX81Z with a keyboard, presumable velocity-sensitive.
Sounds like a good idea to me, especially if the price is right.

There is some info on this beast in the current (FEB) issue of MUSIC
TECHNOLOGY magazine. The info is contained in an article about
the Tokyo Music Fair. Here's what it says:
"YAMAHA V2: The Yamaha V2 debuted here as a new 4-operator/8-algorithm
FM synth. In the US it will be called the DXII. It is eight-note
polyphonic, and its 61-key keyboard has aftertouch and velocity
control. Like the TX81Z, with which it is compatible, waveforms
beside a sine wave can be used as waves for operators. As a result,
even though it's a 4-operator model, a variety of sounds can be
created. Frequency Fine, Fixmode, EG Reverb, Transposed Delay,
Pan, and Chord Set are all parameters available for sound-making
functions. It also has micro tuning, which has become popular with
the DX7II instruments. One of the unique functions of the V2 is
called Quick Edit. This allows you to change nuances of a sound's
attack, release, brilliance, and volume with one touch. It is a
convenience not only for beginners, but for all programmers because
it can be used to change details of the preset sounds as well.
One hundred a twenty-eight new preset sounds were created just for
the V2. The data for them is also compatible with the TX81Z. A
RAM4 cartridge can also be used for storing more programs. As for
performance functions, ther are detune parameters, note shift between
each sound and Alternate, with which you can produce different sounds
for each successive key on. You can split the keyboard in eight
sections, create partial layers, or play eight sounds together in
unison. Because each of the eight sounds can receive on different
MIDI channels, it can be used effectively as a sound source for
a sequencer."
No price was mentioned, nor was an availability date.

Ah! You didn't look closely at the picture. There was a price
(in Yen, along with a heap of Kanji giberish) on the sign above
the instrument.
I don't remember the exact number, but I estimated the dollar
equivalent to be about $1000.
It's physically the same size as the DX2[17].

| Any mention of being able to get any of those new TZ patches? Hope
they're better than the presets. Maybe now the TZ will begin to
blossom and emerge as a standard...

At 1:07 you'd need a second mortgage....
With the way the dollar has been bouncing around, it's almost futile
to try and guess the price... much less convert yen to pennies...
I'd guess the unit would retail in the $600 to $800 range. The DX21
listed for $795 when announced....

| If the DXII is in fact in the $600-$800 range, And has at least 12 bits
of resolution (ala the TZ) and comes with some killer patches (ala
WX7 demo record), I'd better start saving my pennies. How am I gonna
talk myself out of buying this one?

TO MY EAR {eh?}
no, I dont mean DAC resolution. Im talking seriously
considering a program to transform fb01 voices to
tz voices JUST to get at the fb sounds that I *do* like.
worth it?

I think that the only thing the Fb01 is compatible with, from a
voice architecture point of view is the CX5. I know this works cos
I tried it !

According to the literature that I received from Yamaha just last
night, this is exactly the same thing as TX81Z, discounting the
keyboard of course (5 octave, velocity sensitive with aftertouch).
The official Yamaha SRP is $995. This is not to say you won't be
able to buy it for less. That is just the official SRP.
Oh yes, it has stereo output.

Another nugget from USENET (edited to the important stuff)
>Well, I just had a look at the DX11...
>Damn, if it doesn't have better preset sounds than my/the TX81Z.
>(For those interested, the DX11 is a TX81Z with a keyboard...)
>I am pissed. Do you all suppose they offer a rom/preset upgrade
>for the lame TX81Z presets?? The only reason I have any decent
>sounds at all for it is that before I got rid of my DX100, I
>dumped the best sounds to tape, and loaded them onto the TX81Z.
>That and the sparse usable presets makes it a decent box with
>more potential than it shows. (grrr...)
Apparently, at least on the west coast DX-IIs are in the stores....

1182.14 | DX11 is nice! | UFP::LARUE | Jeff LaRue - MAA Senior Network Consultant | Thu Apr 07 1988 20:01 | 39 |
| The local store near me has the DX11's in (yup, that's eleven, not two!)
I got a chance to play with one this afternoon and found that the
preset patches in some cases resemble those in the TX81Z but in many
other cases...simply are much, much better. The layering (the sales
rep called it "stacking"(?)) of 4 patches to make one performance patch
creates a richness/depth that is excellent.

1182.15 | priceless patches? | MIZZOU::SHERMAN | Baron of Graymatter | Mon Apr 11 1988 08:24 | 7 |
| Hey, shouldn't there be a way for us TZ owners to get the DX11 patches?
I wouldn't mind buying data sheets if it's worth it, but it doesn't
look like Yamaha is offering. So, how do I get them 'honestly'?
Does the fact that they are only available in the DX11 ROM make
it 'okay' to snarf a copy?

| RE < Note 1182.15 by MIZZOU::SHERMAN "Baron of Graymatter" >
Regarding Yamaha patches... I just got a newsletter from a small
company in Connecticut that writes patches for the TZ (excellent patches, BTW).
They mentioned that Yamaha is going to be publishing a couple of volumes of free
patches in the near future. Perchance might these be the DX11 patches? I'll
keep you informed as I hear more.
