1160.0. "Yamaha DX7/DX7II/TX802 Patches - Swapping and Tricks" by FGVAXZ::LAING (Pipe Dreamer * Jim Laing * 261-2194) Wed Jan 20 1988 09:30

I'm thinking of 'upgrading' from my DX-7 to something newer by Yamaha,
either the DX-7 II or a TX802 and controller (I still have to decide
that ...) Anyways, I'm wondering how easy it'll be for me to transfer
my old DX-7 patches into either new unit. I'm using a Macintosh,
and OpCode's Editor/Librarian ... will I be able to transfer? Or,
can I do it directly from DX-7 to [DX-& II | TX-802] instead?

Also, does anyone know of one can (cheaply) get an upgrade from
OpCode, from DX-7 EdLib to DX-7 II or TX802 EdLib?

All of your old DX-7 patches should be upwardly compatible with
the second generation units, via sys-ex. This works like a
charm for me with my 1st generation DX21 and 2nd generation TX81Z.

Derek Kay and I have had much fun swapping patches between his DX7
and my TX802. There is compatibility but it is not total. I can
certainly receive all the older generation patches via a Bulk dump
iniitiated at the other end. The Dx7 can receive voices going the
other way, but has a tendancy to confuse the P.E.G. paramaters for
some reason. This is however fairly easily rectified by resetting
that one parameter. Derek would be able to tell you which is the
    offending Byte. (Minder::Kay).

As to which to choose. It depends what you need. There is the obvious
issue of the Keyboard, so we needn't get into that. The reason I
went for the TX rather than for the DX is that I intend to use it
in a studio environment and the 8 outs and multitymbrality, (Len
is this a real word?) are a real bonus. Also the FM editing interface
on the TX802 is a step towards being more "userfriendly". Whichever
you choose I don't think you will be dissapointed. As I was telling
Steph and 25000 other people, off line, On aquiring My TX802 I set
out to develop a BASS patch which added string rattle in various
amounts using aftertouch. Using one of the already present Bass
patches, adding the string rattle took about 30 minutes of piddling
with the parameters and the manual. And I have only ever used 4
OP FM before. If anyone wants the patch I will post it or Steph
should have a Machine Readable copy in a week or so.

While everyone's starting "PAtches for X" notes, I'll add another.
I've had a Yamaha TX-802 for about a year, and I've developed alot
of patches ("performances" in Y-word lingo) for it. Many are altered
versions of my old DX patches, lots are new layers/splits and other
combinations of my previous patches. Some from public domain, some
that came in Yamaha ROMs (and I then modified), some I even put
in manually from copies of Keyboard or Aftertouch mag.

    I don't use a Patch Librarian ... are there any "north-of-Boston,
to Southern New Hampshire" TX-802 owners out there that would be
interested in sharing the patches they've created? Or, maybe just
to share techniques/tricks we've developed for getting more out
    of this box ...

I should add that I considered putting this NOTE under one of the
DX notes, but I thought that the "performances" on a TX-802 are
different enuf from DX-series units, to warrant its own note.

An example is one simple "trick" I use: I have two sets of 16 patches
which are splits, and layers within the splits. I think of the
layers as "stops" on an organ ... I can turn the on and off
individually. Of course, you have to be concerned about number
    of notes available.

One set of 16 is ... on the left 1/3 of the keyboard, a choice of
4 bass sounds (or any combination of them); on the right 2/3 of
the keyboard, a choice of 2 sounds. Thus, the Left hand is 2-note
polyphonic, the right 4-note. Which is OK for my purposes in using
these TX-802 Performances. Another group of Performances is "pipe
organs" with 2 or 3 "stops" available each. Just toggle the "stops"
using the 8 buttons under the LCD window.
