1136.0. "Recommendation - Portable Synth w/ Piano Sound" by HARDY::JKMARTIN (Jay Martin) Mon Jan 11 1988 19:14

Someone I know is trying to understand the best way to get into
a portable keyboard setup that excels in piano voicing, is very
light, and has at least 66 keys (plus or minus). Key touch (ie,
piano-like vs. organ-like, etc) is not a top priority, but something
that tends to be more piano-like would be preferred. Of course,
cost is always an issue. MIDI capability, of course, is required,
with a nice feature of having it serve as a keyboard master in a
    MIDI setup.

Can such a thing be done for under $1K?

Take a look at the Roland Series. They have so many models, I can't keep track
of them all. Ask for some Roland brochures at your local dealer. The MKS-20
rack mount is still around $1495.00 here in Mass. but may be cheaper via
mail order.

Probably not, unless you find some desparate music student trying to raise
next quarter's tuition by selling his equipment.

Ensoniq makes (made?) a sampled piano unit, I believe including
string bass and electric piano sounds, as well as a credible grand
piano.. one of these may be available used.

Korg makes some keyboards called 'sampling grands', unheard by this
    reviewer.

Also, there may be some home-oriented units ala' Clavinova that
have decent piano sounds.. I don't follow that market at all.

    best luck. karl

Daddy's in Nashua has both the Ensoniq and Korg sampling grand keyboards
for $1000. Either one might match your requirements.

re .0	"IF" you're in the Southern NH/ Northern Mass area
(isn't everybody thats anybody ? :-)) it may be worth a visit to
the Yamaha piano dealer in the downtown area of Nashua. I don't
know the name, but its on Main St just south of Canal St., and its
more "Home Piano" (including the $15K grands) oriented than Daddy's,
which is "pro audio gear" oriented.

    oriented.
