Hi, I'm looking into getting an 8-track and am considering a TASCAM 38. My question is - can make it work with SMPTE - syncing to video, etc? Do you need something like an SBX-80 to do it? I talked to a TASCAM rep once and he said you couldn't make the 38 do SMPTE. From reading the notes on the subject - it looks to me like you can. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Bill

A 38 out of the box will not chase a SMPTE sync signal. You can
use it as the master, i.e., record a sync track on it that other
devices will chase, but the 38 itself will not chase anything.
So, for example, you couldn't take two stock 38s and make a 14 track
machine out of them.
An SBX-80 will not help - the SBX-80 will provide the sync signal
you could record on the 38, but the 38's drive logic is not set
up to chase such a signal. You could put FSK on the 38, use that
track to drive the SBX-80, get SMPTE out of the SBX-80 and send
that to some other device, but the 38 must be the master.

The FOSTEX M-80 has a SMPTE option. dave | |||||

So does the Otari. Mark III has it standard, implemented thorough
it's own track, not one of the 8 audio tracks.
Does the Tascam autolocator respond to SMPTE?
