1003.0. "Syncing Roland TR505 Drum Box to Tascam Porta Two" by COMICS::SOWTON (Drum,drum,drum,drummy droowah) Fri Nov 06 1987 04:41

	I'm looking for a way to generate a midi sync pulse from
	a TR505 suitable for recording on the sync track of the
	Porta Two 4 track. Track 4 can be used for this purpose but
	there is no direct sync from the 505. Being a humble
	enjinear, I realise the task involves decoding the sync code
	and generating an audio pulse for recording and creating the
	sync code from the audio pulse in the other direction. Maybe
	there's a box available but if not I quite fancy making one
	up if I can get the necessary details.

	Bob ( who's timing ain't wot it oughta....)

Well Bob, it seems to me that it probably ain't worth building a box. I
know the TR707 does sync to tape (does it do vice versa?) so it may be worth
selling the 505 and picking up the 707 (and getting individual outputs to
boot).  I've seen TR707's used for $250ish.

    There are several boxes in the $90-$110 range that convert MIDI
    sync to recordable line-level FSK signal. I have and like the Yamaha
    YMC-10.

    Karl,
    Does the YMC-10 go the other way...FSK to MIDI sync ?
    If it does then that's what I need for sure...

1003.4goes both ways, but it's really a DC deviceSALSA::MOELLERPonce de Lon overcompensatedFri Nov 06 1987 12:155
    Yes, the YMC-10 will take already-recorded FSK tone and convert
    it back to MIDI sync. The unit can handle FSK recorded with DOLBY
    C and DOLBY B, as well as no noise reduction.

Also, some computer MIDI interfaces have built in FSK syncing capabilities.
You could run the 505 into the computer, and steal the FSK signal off the
MIDI interface. Don't know how much an FSK interface would run you moneywise
though...

1003.6What about SMPTE SYNC ?MINDER::KENTReview? What Review?Mon Nov 09 1987 07:017

    The YMC-10 costs about 200 pounds here in the U.K. for another
    60 pounds you could buy the new J. L. Cooper poor mans SMPTE box
    which would also give you sync to midi song pointers as well.

    re -1..

    for a fairly complete overview of the new J.L. Cooper MIDI sync
    unit and its protocol, see the "That SYNCING Feeling" topic in this
    conference.
