I had a musical font for vt240, but I think I deleted it.

    The de facto standard musical symbols font is Adobe's "SONATA",
    which can be ordered from Abobe Systems. It's a PostScript font
    so you need either a LN03R or a LPS40 to print with it.
    
    I don't know of any editing software for VMS, though. You'd
    have to write your own.

    I have some music fonts for the Apple Macintosh.
    
    Has anyone tried to convert them to LN03 format?
    
    What is the resolution of the LN03? I wonder how large they would
    be? (Largest font I have is 24-point on the Mac, which is 72 dots
    per inch).
    
    This would be useful in general, as there are tons of neat fonts
    for the Mac.

    The LN03 is 300 dots per inch.  In my experience, expanding a dot
    matrix font by a factor of two requires a few minutes of touch-up
    per character to make it look decent.  You'd have to do that twice
    to go from 72 to 300 dpi.
    
    I called Adobe about the Sonata font.  They sell it only on Macintosh
    disks, though they hope to offer it on IBM PC disks in the near
    future.  When I asked how to get the font to the LPS40, they suggested
    that I rent a Macintosh for a day and upload the text file.
    
    If anyone gets Sonata to work on the LPS40 please let me know. 
    I am unwilling to pay $90 for a font file without some assurance
    that it will work.

Fonts are copyrighted.  If you paid money for a music font, do not not
put it onto this network for others.

    I second .7.  Producing a font requires as much (or more) work as
    producing a program.  Fonts, like programs, are copyrighted.  Please
    don't reduce a font producer's income by giving away his fonts.
    I have produced both fonts and programs for Digital, and I wouldn't
    like to see my livelyhood put at risk by an attitude that fonts
    (and programs) are free.

I agree with .9 he made it, he published it. My friend Tom if some day I
come out with some good VMS music package, as I will soon do, you
will be the first person I will offer it even the sources so you can use 
them and learn.

    Regarding the issue of publishing proprietary music fonts, DICKSON
    and SAUTER have given some ethical reasons for not doing so but
    there is another very important reason not to do it which strikes
    much closer to home.
    
    Being new to notes there's an aspect of E-net noting that you probably
    aren't aware of.  Non-work related notes exist solely by the grace
    of company officials.  They are allowed (like a benefit) up to the 
    as long as they don't incur problems for Digital.

    Please believe me when I tell you that it just isn't as simple as
    "people just trying to help each other" or "reserving rights".
    
    This is why:
    
    Using the E-net to publish and distributing copyrighted material
    makes DEC a party to copyright infringement.  DEC could be held
    liable for damages.
    
    				Key point
    
    		The first time 	DEC gets stung by a lawsuit for 
    		something done in a non-work related conference 
    		will be THE END OF NON-WORK RELATED CONFERENCES 
    		like COMMUSIC.
    
    Please believe me, this is VERY SERIOUS!  I know, I've participated
    in meetings about non-work related conferences.  I don't know what
    I can say to convince you other than that, if people insist on doing
    this kind of thing, you are risking the futures of ALL non-work
    related conferences.

    I understand how serious it is. However, below are some ideas that I
    would like to share with my fellow workers:

    Mostly DEC products are focused on CAM, CAE, CAD, Languages and, OEM's
    for hardware purposes. It is about time that DEC, who is now making
    the big blue to look not that blue, take advantage on a more flexible
    an suitable type of products for super DEC minis. uVax, GPX, Vaxmate,
    Vax-386??, and other products can be used for music R/D better than any
    other machine. And believe me I've worked with PC's Assembler, Apple's
    Assembly IIe and Mac, Commodore and Coco's developing MIDI software
    and if you compare the capabilities of Vax-Macro... forgetit.  With
    VAX arquitecture you can develop MIDI/MUSIC/COMPUTERS/PRINTS... you
    have never think of.

    But who can afford a VAX machine for MIDI music at home ? Of course,
    it is a matter of business orientation. I know about four recording 
    studios, profitable of about one million dollars a year, that are not even 
    using computers for their Ledgers, AP, AR and DBMS applications. Just 
    think about a system that can provide capability of business application 
    and with all the goddies of MIDI interfacing for any kind of recording. 
    I'm sure all musicians will run to that recording studio.

    ... well, maybe I'm just dreaming... remember, somebody have to think
    ahead of what can be developed and just the thought can be a very 
    'WORK-RELATED'. Shearing knowledge about music which is a 'NON-WORK
    RELATED' topic can be seen as new strategies on what inputs DEC
    employees can give about their expertise to develop music software
    hardware products.

    If there is a conference about music and music interfaces with
    computers, what is DEC's approach toward this market ? Are we the
    one that should expose what DEC can do for music interfacing based on
    what is on the market ?

    I like to share my experiences, knowledges and of course know other
    people that wish to point DEC toward a better and wider end market.

    represents a drop in the bucket compared to Digital's revenues in
    other marketplaces.  This conference probably represents one of
    the highest concentrations of computer literate nonprofessional
    musicians in the country, so we tend to perceive more activity than

    Have you think about the revenues of IBM due to the micro market?
    Their incursion in that 'drop in the bucket' is what is keeping
    them looking a little blue. I'm not sure if Dave is getting my message
    but anyway, I still want to know what can be done with the 'highest
    computer related conference'?
    
    Forget about big people... don't you guys really think that my concern
    is shared with others at DEC?

    Currently, their PC stuff loses money.  Everything loses money for
    IBM except for the real hardware (honkin system 370s.  Things that
    run VM and MVS).  Still, with all that lost money, they are getting
    a heap of revenue, and thats what sells the real hardware.  What
    makes them big keeps them happy, but indirectly.

    Comparing IBM's sales of PCs to the market for computer based musical
    instruments and processing exemplifies exactly the kind of
    misconception I was trying to point out.  The music marketplace
    is a "drop in the bucket" compared to the PC marketplace.  We are
    a very small community, compared to just about anything.

Don't forget the money that DEC makes from field service contracts.  Big
bucks.  Somehow I don't see too many music hobbyists signing contracts
for $500 per year...

    I never thought your attitude toward some R/D on MIDI using DEC
    machines was that poor. As I said... I enjoy working with music.
    I just tried to capture some mindsets of DEC employees. If there
    isn't any serious thing more than just jamming, I don't think it's
    worth for me spending time reading music conference. Don't get me
    wrong... I'd really enjoyed to share me opinions and read about
    yours. What I've learned from you is to read, communicate, jam,
    etc., for relaxing, and personal knowledge. There is no way,
    as I see, to link DEC with some music related matter. If there is,
    I haven't seen it by now.

    Finally, the terms of the employee agreement we all sign when we
    join the company makes any such software we develop the property
    of Digital, unless the Corporation waives its "rights" to that
    software.  This agreement has resulted in a bunch of Digital employees
    who own Commodore Amigas and develop software for them stopping
    any further Amiga development, as Digital considers the Amiga a
    competitive machine and developing software for it a "conflict of
    interest".  This is probably also true of IBM PC and Apple Macintosh
    music software developed by Digital employees.
    
    I'd love to see Digital offer MIDI software, and I'd love to be
    part of that effort.  I just don't believe it's ever going to happen.
    But you're free to tilt at whatever windmills you care to.
    
    And a lot of us are into music in far more serious ways than "just

    I've read about COMMUSIC I, II and III (not release),but ... what's
    all about? Are they recorded tapes with good extracts of your jamming
    sessions? Where can I get them?

    The Commusic tapes are not jam tapes.  The are recording projects
    done by various DEC employees combined onto one cassette tape and
    sent out as a sorta "sampler of DEC musicians".  It's a chance to
    hear the music done by people you know from notes.
    
    I think if you listen to Commusic III you will discover that many
    of us are quite serious about our music.   (I mean look at all the
    bucks we throw into equipment!!! ;-0 ).
