858.1 | Yamaha WX-7 | PHUBAR::WELLS | Left of Center | Mon Jul 06 1987 13:25 | 12 |
| A recent rec.music.synth posting describing summer '87 NAMM product
introductions identifies this as the WX-7, `a midi lyricon-like
wind controller'.
The BC-1 is only usable by DX synths that have breath controller
inputs, right? Are there any breath controllers out there that
simply output MIDI signals? I.e. I could merge the output of said
controller with a keyboard (that doesn't have a breath controller
input) and send them to a tone module.

| The WX-7 is said to output MIDI signals, though I think I read it has to be
hooked up to a rack-mount box, that's part of the WX-7 package, in order to
do so.
I see lyricons listed on album credits all the time. What are they? Is it
another word for sopranino saxophone, or are they similar?

Re: .2
A Lyricon was a wind synthesizer built a few years ago. It looked
like the top half of a soprano sax (that is, short) and plugged
into a controller box which doubled as a case. It had primitive
(by today's standards) mono-synth functions.
A sopranino sax is just a sax voiced higher than a soprano.
A very good example of lyricon is on the first Shadowfax album on
Windham Hill. The lyricon is used on all the cuts where the soprano
sax is not used and should be easily identified (there are no keyboard
synths on the album).

| I urge everyone to hear the demo of the Wx7 and TX81z combo
in the june AFTERTOUCH publication.
It blew me away.
We forget how hard it is to get nuance out of a keyboard. Theres
much more needed besides pushing down a key at a certain velocity.
The Wx must(?) have sensors for tonguing (triggers), air pressure
and/or breath velocity and key-to-note info. BUT what it might also
have is key pressure and 'mouthpiece bite' pressure sensors....
The thing plays a lead guitar (with the tx81z) that impresses.....

| I'm a subscriber too. I was pretty amazed by the demo. I thought
the electric bass (from the DX7II?) sounded like a funkmeister gone
wild. The whole thing was *very* impressive.
Being a wind player (flute), I'd love to get my hands (and mouth!)
on one of those controllers. Neat stuff.

NOTE WELL the implication of tounging and sluring. SOMEHOW
they translate those gestures for midi use.
Guitarists dont pick every note...
ANYONE have a midi kbd that doesnt trigger everytime you press
a key?

| I also noticed that the recent KEYBOARD mag article on wind MIDI
cntrollers did not give Steinberg Research's contact address...
although I hear they make the premier units.
Could it be because Steinberg doesn't ADVERTISE in KEYBOARD?

The February 88 issue of ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN has nice in-depth
look at the Akai/Steiner system. They discuss why it's a synth
package instead of a straight MIDI controller like the WX-7.
Worth reading if you're at all intersted in articulation, phrasing
and expression (which should be anybody!!)
