On 24 May 1987, the San Francisco Synthesiser Ensemble performed a concert ON the Golden Gate Bridge, marking the 50th anniversary of the bridge. Yes, that's right, the performed the concert ON the bridge, using mallets to stroke the cables! Turns out, the cables produce eerie sounds that are quite musical, which had been noticed by many people when the wind blew through the cables. The ensemble researched the pitches and wrote a composition for the bridge. Mark

L.A.-based technodweebe composer Michael Stearns has featured a stringed instrument called the Beam on several of his albums. This is a 20' long steel girder fitted with tuning pegs and a bridge (hah!).. 10 strings, played with a wooden scraper/mallet. The Beam was invented by L.A.-based New Age weenie Constance Demby. karl moeller | |||||

A little known fact is that this composition, performed some eighteen months ago, set forces into motion deep beneath the earth's crust that have been responsible for a series of recent natural disasters. Music CAN be dangerous! Congress is considering legislation outlawing instruments larger than a kitchen sink. Meanwhile, the Pentagon is complaining and requesting a waiver, because they claim the pending lesgislation would have negative impact on their submarine communications antennae. The State of Michigan has joined suit against the Pentagon, claiming that the proposed antenna would link the upper and lower peninsula and cause a rash of escaped convicts wreaking terror throughout the North Country. Minnesotans, normally very reserved, have talked about joining in this suit. But it's just talk, so far. Although it seems likely that the recent earthquake was caused by the earlier performance of this composition on the Golden Gate Bridge, insiders say that the REAL story is that the Pentagon, inspired by the musicians' example, was testing minor vibrations in the bridge as a way of sending signals to submarines off the coast of Alaska. The personnel involved, unfortnately, were not classically trained, and used a natural minor scale instead of the harmonic minor. This just goes to show what can happen when you play a bad note!
