727.4 | Gettem THRU rat shack! | BARNUM::RHODES | | Wed Mar 25 1987 09:07 | 9 |

Just bought a bunch of them at rat shack for 59 cents per. Active
didn't have them in stock (I tried them first) and stated that it
would be a number of weeks before they would show up.
Active does have the 6N138 opto mentioned in the MIDI spec for $2.39
(for all you THRU box constructers).
Todd (MIDI thru box constructer).

727.5 | yours cheep! | JON::ROSS | wockin' juan | Thu Mar 26 1987 17:46 | 28 |
| hm....yes thats the price I see too. Guess it beats Active.
(for once).
BTW. I have a modestly exquisite design using the 6N138 that
gets the rise/fall times of the midi signal under 500 ns.
(Midi spec= 2 usec max.) If you try to just substitute the 138
for the PC900 in the midi schematic it wont cut it. They say:
"6N138 or other...may be substituted with appropriate changes."
The PC900 is sole sourced and more expensive (if you can find it).
I cant claim that it's elaborate or novel, but since it took me
about an hour with a fast scope to find the [G.D.] "appropriate
changes" for the 6N138, I am offering the design on paper for
$5 (US) to any of you affectionados. This was done on non-DEC time.
Help me deduct some of my hobby...

727.7 | PC900's are cheap | NOVA::ARNOLD | | Fri Mar 27 1987 13:58 | 6 |
| re .5
PC900's run about $.60 in quantity. You would be lucky to get 6N138's
for less than $1.50 in the same quantities. Believe me, I've purchased
about 600 total of the both of them in the last year.

727.10 | | NOVA::ARNOLD | | Mon Mar 30 1987 15:37 | 5 |
| Like I said in .7, the prices are for QUANTITY (100 or more). The
place I purchased the PC900s from was Western Microtechnology. They
are a distributor for Sharp down in Massachusetts. You can always
call them and ask for a "sample".
