I just bought a Roland EP-50. It seems to be the least expensive way to get into piano and midi at the same time. Price: somewhere around $795 new, price just went up. I got a demo unit for a bit less. I was torn between buying this vs. a synthesiser. I ended up buying the EP-50 because I can now buy a synth when I am ready, and not need a keyboard, as the EP-50 can control a synth. The EP-50 has 76 keys (6+ octaves). You can transpose the keys +/- half octave. It has 8 presets, piano 1, piano 2, piano 3 and harpsichord, all with or without chorus. I wanted a more-or-less full keyboard because I want to learn to play the piano. I also wanted velocity sensitive keys. The EP-50 has velocity on and off, as well as a damper foot pedal. Now, when I am ready for a synth, I will have velocity and a full keyboard. In the meantime, I won't be distracted by a synthesizer while trying to learn the piano. While the piano sound isn't the best, it sounds better than the CZ1000, and is much more realistic with velocity sensitive keys. -Dave

686.1 | EP50 - looked nice to me | AKOV11::MINEZZI | Fri Oct 19 1990 16:45 | 9
This is a old note. How well does the EP50 rate? is it a nice Keyboard? How much do ya think one would go for used? I have an opportunity to buy one, and I don't know if the price is a fair one for the keyboard? How much do you think a used EP50 would go for? What's a fair price? Ron.
686.2 | I often thought of getting one (b4 I got my RD200) | MAIL::EATOND | In tents | Fri Oct 19 1990 18:36 | 16 |
I always liked the EP50... I'd say it has an action comparable to my RD200 digital piano. I wouldn't recommend it based on its sounds, but I do think it's make a nice controller. Combine it with, oh, a U220 and I'd say you'd have one nice system. They were available fairly often a year or so back in the used market, and they would often be going for an asking price of $400. They're certainly not an advanced controller, in fact, the MIDI control you'd have with an EP50 would be fairly limited (i.e., no pitch bend wheel, no mod wheel, fairly cumbersome to change patches or midi channels). But if all you want is piano action, I can't think of a more cost-effective way to go. Dan |
