| I seem to recall hearing some bad things about it (expensive?) but
You-Do-It electronics in Needham seems to have a large selection
of parts. I think somebody also mentioned a place in Westborough
whose name escapes me (no, *not* Len's place).
Uhm, there's at least one electrical outlet "component" on each
wall of my apartment... ;^)

| You ought to be able to replace broken pots at that big horticultural
place on route 20 in Sudbury...

| ... or Stark Electronics on Franklin St. in Worcester. They pander
more to the radio and TV crowd, no prom blasting, but it's easy
to get a pot or an output transistor.
Please pay the highest price you can find if you want us to like
you.

Or, call up Tascam, ask to talk to a repair technician, and
talk him/her into sending it to you 1st class.

| If you buy it from anybody but Tascam, be sure to get the correct
type. Pots are made in several different tapers, such as linear,
logarithmic, etc. For example, replacing a linear with a logarithmic
will make the control useless.
If you can replace with the same manufacturer/part number you'll
be OK, but beware of "replacements".

I was in Radio shack looking for a pot and I noticed linear and audio
tapers. What's the difference?

| Methinks audio taper slopes are more horizontal at the far end of
the throw, ie, the difference in level between 9 and 10 is smaller
than the difference between say 2 and 3. (What about 11?)

| I believe the audio taper is logarithmic. They call it audio taper
because it's what they tend to put into audio equipment. If I were
you, I'd go ahead and get a pot that has the right impedance and
audio taper and put that in. But, I'd try not to get a cheapie
because the brushes in these can get noisy.

| I went to Active and U-Do-It. They don't have it so I ordered
from Tascam and with run on 11 channels for now. Thanks anyway!

Pots are notoriously hard to get. Most can be special ordered thru
the standard distributors, very few are stocked. There are some
specialty shops which carry a few common ones but your board
manufacturer was probably the best bet.

| re:.7
Yes, as someone else already said, I believe "audio taper" is basically
logarithmic. They are meant for things like volume controls, because
the perceived loudness is a logarithmic function of the voltage
on the wiper (output) of the pot. Using a logarithmic-tapered pot
means that the perceived loudness increase will be approximately
linear as you crank it up.
Note that controls on audio gear for things like EQ's may have a
linear taper, or may have a bizaar taper that is different in the
middle of rotation, relative to the far ends of rotation.
