I just purchased a Oberheim Xk Master MIDI keyboard, having not
heard mention of this product here in the notes file, I thought
everyone would like to hear about it.
Features
- Five octave velocity and pressure sensitive keyboard
- 10 octave keyboard range (midi notes 0-120)
- Keyboard can be split/layered into 3 zones, each zone assignable
to any midi channel (triple 16 voice possible)
- Each zone has 12 progammable parameters
1 - Patch number
2 - Midi channel number
3 - Voice limit
4 - Lower note value limit
5 - Upper note value limit
6 - Key transpose
7 - Midi mono on/off
8 - Pressure on/off
9 - Levers on/off
10 - Continuous controller value
11 - Foot switch value
12 - Mod lever negative controller value
- Hold, chord, chord latch, chord transpose
- Programmable multi-mode arpeggiator
- Arpeggiator can be assigned to any zone
- External clock for arpeggiator
- Pitch and modulation levers
- Two velocity scales plus off
- Voice spill-over system (notes played higher than the voice limit
are played on the next higher midi channel)
- Programmable footswitch input (either normailly open or normally
closed types)
- Programmable slider (midi continuous controller)
- Programmable pressure threshold
- 100 master keyboard programs
- Battery back-up

how much?
does it 'feel' like another kbd we'd know the action of?

The Xk has a tighter action than that of the Juno-106, but not as firm
as the KX-88. Would be just in the middle. It's a good controller
for the FB-01, having the sensitivity control over the FB-01 and
the TR-505 is great (not as nice as the KX-88, but at half the price,
who can argue!). The default settings of the Xk use the continuous
slider as a remote volume control for the FB-01.

Sure, the KX88 feels nicer. (The price reflects it.) But when
I first saw the Oberheim Xk, I thought the features were great.
Voice spillover? That great for synths other than DX/TX and SS50
'cause the rest of them can run out of voices when playing
classical-style keyboard literature. 3 zones? I thought it was
great. The KX88 has plenty of lead, but not much software...
(Still, I'd buy another one for under $700 or so.) And why
didn't they put more buttons and sliders on it??? I'd be happy
with 8 voice buttons if I could get 20 program controlling buttons.

Has anybody seen any Oberheim Xk's in Boston area stores lately? I haven't really looked or asked any salespersons, just thought I would ask the general commusic public if they've seen any lately. You should be able to find a used one, although a store here and there still may have one lying around. They are very small, velocity sensitive, not weighted, and very flexible. On the down side, people don't care much for the touch, and I'm not sure if there is a way to get it to save its setups (even via MIDI SYSEX - check to make sure).
