| Two things:
1) I would pay up front, given what I've already heard, to hear
more.
2) Can a commercial duplicator handle the dynamic range issues.
Remember, most of our stuff is going to be uncompressed, and recorded
at low levels to leave headroom. Are we going to get back 50 copies
with outrageous distortion levels because the dupes were copied
too hot (to avoid noise problems)?

| ? CAN a commercial duplicator handle the dynamic range issues ?
I dunno... seems to me that's more a matter of the levels on the
master being carefully matched. I did NO gain-riding while copying
the master. Of course, my old NAK 700 can handle up to +7db peak
without sizzling.

| Yea, its worth it. $3.21 is peanuts when you get down to it. Not
only would it be faster, but each individual's copy of the master
would be of higher quality than the "done at home" copys (ie: tape1).

it necessary to give the duplicators a cassette or can they copy
from a reel-to-reel. Seems like the quality would be better if someone
could create the master on a good quality half track.

467.11 | half tracks will travel | CANYON::MOELLER | Donde esta los DEMPRS? | Thu Aug 14 1986 13:59 | 33 |
| It's nice that the idea is taking hold. BUT:
- the $3.21 is an off-the-cuff ESTIMATE.
based on some sucker/I mean volunteer to do the cover layout
on a graphics sytem/printer, and the guesstimate on the per-
cover cost for printing. The tape duplication costs are right
on.
- Brad Schafer seems to be away. As he was the constructor of Tape 1
and (most of) Tape 2, I'd like to hear from him before ramming this
brave new vision down his throat. Perhaps he can complete the
Tape 2 Master and send it here for duplication/distribution.
hmmm... I seem to have advice'd myself right into a lot of work..
Re: Brad's taking issue with certain lyrical content: I don't know
whose music he had in mind, but it would be nice to know what resolve,
if any, they came to. That is,
IS TAPE TWO READY TO ROLL ?
- Tape 2 on Half-Track: not a bad idea, but would require someone
with a setup which included BOTH dbx and Dolby cassette dex, plus
a good halftrack deck.
Uhh.. open reel tape is ~$10 per 7" reel these days. A 7" reel
(remember, on a halftrack you can't turn it over for side B)
at 15ips only lasts 22 minutes. And I can't see bothering with half-
track tape if the speed is only 7 1/2ips.
So, if our fantasy is a 90-minute cassette, that would require 4
7" reels at ~$10.00 APIECE. Plus, the duplicator would have to swap
reels in mid-dup. So I think the costs and cumbersomeness of the
Half-Track idea outweigh any S/N advantages it might have.

| Re: all
Hello, after all this time.
1. I've been getting jerked around by mgmt (again) so have not had
lots of time to note or to work on tape 2. (I.e., DEC has been
very demanding of late.)
2. Was on vacation from Aug 8-15.
3. TEAC IS STILL DEAD! It will be fixed this week or I will have
my day in court (literally).
4. The lyric thing was written in extreme frustration. Although
I have some extreme reservations about lyrics and content, I
will withdraw my objections (please ignore previous mail) and
will NOT try to inflict my opinions on everybody. I'll let you
all decide what you do and don't like. Pardon the temporary
insanity.
Re: Karl
Tape 2 will be done this week, or my name ain't Bugs Bunny. I do not
have anything put together for the tape yet, so I may not appear on
this one, either. (Not that anyone cared, eh?) Since my TEAC has been
down, I have not been able to do any recording of any kind.
Nevertheless, I will try to get this second tape completed this week.
And yeah, I AM getting burnt out on this thing. I would make a
suggestion, though - why not find someone out there in Noteland who has
access to a decent quality duplicating machine, and mail them the
master? Or has this already been discussed?
Here's another wrinkle for you to consider - if we limit each tape to
90 minutes apiece (and we force submissions to be on C90s), I could
always make 1st gen copies of the master and mail back out to you. Of
course, any subsequent compilers may not want to fool with this.
Comments?
Still recovering from vacation/work, but glad to be back in commusic
land ...

I have to apologize for not doing my review of Tape I yet. I'm
now embroiled in the transition back to full-time academics (at
Brown U. courtesy of GEEP). I had planned to do the review before
I got here but had to finish up my projects. I want to write the
review while I'm listening to the tape so I can make coherent comments.
If I'm lucky, that will be 1-2 more weeks. Trust me, it will get
done. (After all, I've gotten a lot of info from reading other
people's reviews and want to give what I have received.)
I hope Tape II gets started soon, too. As we've seen, sending tapes
around can take an infinite amount of time. The ssoner the better.
Having heard Tape I, I'm anxious to hear the contributions on Tape
II.
Well, if i can get this homework done, maybe I can start on my review

| First the good news...
As I noted earlier, I received the tapes from Brad. Thanks
for getting them out!
Now the bad news....
The tape II project is HAUNTED!!! When we last heard from
Brad, his TEAC had died a horrible death while attempting to compile
this tape. Well, I didn't have the cassettes in my possesion 10
minutes when my reel to reel went up in smoke!!! Seems to have
a problem with the power supply....
Anyhow, after sacrificing every 250V 1A fuse Radio Shack had in
stock to the Short Gods (and still not appeasing them) the fault
has been isolated to the board level. Tonite, I hope to find the
faulty component (suspect diode) and HOPEFULLY be back on-line for
the weekend.
People.... some of you have generously sent hours worth of submissions.
This is all well and good, but I'm gonna have a hard time fitting
it all on a C90. In all fairness, I intend to give preference to
those who didn't make it onto Tape I. Even at that, some people
are still way above what I consider a reasonable allotment. I can
think of at least 2 ways to handle it...
o Make tape II a multiple tape set.
o Cut back on the individual submissions. If this schould
be the case, I would prefer that the individual sub-
mitters tell me which entries they want cut/entered.
(Dave Bottom has already done this.) Some have said
they'll leave it up to me. That's all well and good,
but I'd prefer THEY make the decision. Otherwise,
the tape comes out as "Edd Cote's favorites from
The Noters". Not fair to you folks....

| Re: .58 - .60
Here's the way I put it together, Edd. You can take it for what
it's worth.
I decided on a maximum per person - 4 songs or 15 minutes, whichever
came first. (I wasn't real sticky on this - was my guideline only.)
I would listen to an entire submission before I ever began to tape it,
timing it and listening to the quality of the recording. If the time
/song limit was reached, I would make notes as to which I considered to
be the best tunes. If the submitter had outlined which songs to
ignore, I would use that list first to "deselect" tunes. If I still
needed more room, I would then send mail to the submitter, using
comments from my notes, posing suggestions as to which songs to delete.
Of course, if there ever arose any dispute, the submitter was always
right.
Hope that kinda helps you out, and I'm REAL sorry to hear about
your tape deck. Mine *still* isn't fixed. 8-(

| I misinterpreted the goals, I guess. I think I sent 18 minutes worth.
Sorry. Anyway, my compositions are of such variable length that I prefer
leaving it up to the compiler as to which ones to use. Some are less than
a minute, a few are more than five minutes. Whatever best fits the overall
tape. I went to the trouble of timing every submission. And in case you
got two tapes, the earlier tape is obsolete and the newer tape (and liner
notes) should be self-evident.
If my attitude preempts me from the second tape, I couldn't care less.
I am far too busy at work to have time to worry about such things.
