Any good lyricists out there who want to develop some apriori lyrics
that we can design the music around? (For the MIDIWIFE, of course.)
Maybe we should just play it by ear - Spend some time socializing,
and then bang a few tunes out to tape.
Is it definitely gonna happen? Will it be at DD's house? Will
it be on Saturday August 9th? Who's gonna attend (a new topic for
attendees?)

the reference is to a song by the Bonzo Dog Band. I can't remember
the name, I'll have to dig up the casette tonight and find it.
It's probably right next to my pink half of the drainpipe.
To get back on the subject, I'd also be interested in the COM JAM.
I'll bring my amp and a few guitars (not that I'm Steve Howe mind
you). You just never know when you'll need a bass guitar since
we all know that real musicians either sing, play keyboards, play
guitar, or play drums. (There I've proably offended everyone now.)
Let's it "COMMUSICations Breakdown" or is that the name for the
COMMUSIC II tape.

| Does 28 count as old? I keep trying to convince myself that it
doesn't.
The only reason I knew it was because of one of my friend's incredibly
eclectic record collection and afanaticism. He is a quintessential
collector. If he likes one album a group puts out, he'll by them all
in search of elusive gems and unreleased B-sides. We used to drive
around on weekends looking for parties while listening to tapes of
groups such as the Bonzo Dog Band, 10cc (a particular favorite was "I
Pity Inanimate Objects"), etc. Another hobby was going to "the
Steakout" (a definitely non-Yuppie bar in Westborough) and playing
bizarre B-sides on the jukebox while wasting as much money on pinball
as humanly possible. Our greatest revenge was actually playing a song
enough that other's would end up playing it too. (This actually
happened with Hard-hearted Hannah or one of those other weird George
Harrison singles!)
But I digress... back to work.

Planning is definitely in order. If KMII wants to send some charts out ahead

top of the pops hits we all sort of know so we can at least get the lyrics
written down, and we can try to work out the arrangements on the fly.

| Okay, I'll attempt to be Quincy Jones...
First of all, I want us all to have good time. It will be nice to
place faces with names.
Secondly, I would like it to be a learning experience for those who
don't have access to a studio with this type of gear. Maybe a sort of
show'n'tell of the equipment.
Ciriculum:
A) How the board is set up and why.
B) how the patch bay is wired and why.
C) How the board interfaces with the tape deck.
D) How the MIDI network is set up and why.
E) How to sync sequencers and drum machines.
F) How to synch to tape using PPQ and FSK.
What I would like to avoid is 5 guitars, 3 drumsets, 6 keyboards, and
2 basses all playing different things, out of tune and making a racket.
The Jam section should be inspirational, yet controled. I would also
prefer it to based around synths, samplers, drum machines, electronic
drums, etc. More in line with this conference.
It would also be nice to know who is coming and what they are bringing.
If your planning on bringing a keyboard, sound module, or sampler,
please:
1) Bring 1 15' MIDI cord per module.
2) Bring 1 15' Phono jack cord per sound module.
Also an extra keyboard stand or two.
An extra 6 input power outlet or two.
Only one drum set, preferable electronic, as there is not enough room.
A guitar amp or two.
Your favorite AXE.
Only one bass amp and cab is needed.
Any studio quality mics (AGK 414, SM-58, Sennhieser 441, EV RE-20, etc.)
One or two will due.
An expansion mixer (6 or 8 ch) for the extra keys is neccesary.
I can plug it into the sub-ins on my board.
Also, volunteers to bring some food and BYOB...
The studio contains a bar but it needs to be stocked.
All MIDI equipment will be patch in to the 4 in / 8 out MIDI patcher
(programmable be MIDI of course). This is the base MIDI system as it
stands now:
MIDI Patcher TX7 Jupiter-6
MKB-200 SBX-10 MC-500
I have lots more room to expand the MIDI setup but now I'm limited
on open tracks on the board. I'll have only four inputs on the board
available. A submixer would help. I wish I got a bigger board.

TR-707 drum machine
Octapad
I am NOT bringing:
USS drum rack
cymbals
cymbal stands
Thus the current arrangement for drummers is to plug Dave's drummer's
Tama pads into my octapad, making MIDI outs than can drive my 707,
which we will run through the board, and use Dave's drummer's cymbals.

REVIEW
The much touted musical event of the DECade finally arrived
this past saturday afternoon and was a relatively rousing success.
Many of Digitals big guns of the musical notes files were on hand
to display their midi accessories and their talents. Dave and Ellen
Dreher, midi-husband and midi-wife, were ready and waiting when the
guest began to arrive.
Ed Cote was the first to arrive and brought a nice Gibson
bass along with his midi equipment. Rik Sawyer arrived shortly after
Ed and, as he owns no midi equipment, brought some beer, wine, choco-
late cookies and his washburn guitar. Don Sharp, bringing some midi
equipment and his guitar, Karl Moeller and Steve Klosterman all arriv-
ed within a short period after this and things started to move. Steve,
a smoking bass player, used Ed's gibson, Rik was on Dave's guitar and
everyone else partook of a keyboard and the first jam was underway.
This lasted about 10 minutes and, along with being a good warmup, dis-
played to everyone attending that talent was in abundance. Steve left
at the end of the first jam as he had his own band to attend to that
afternoon. First applause to Steve Klosterman and thanks for coming.
As Steve was leaving, almost everone meandered to the living
room for a breath of fresh air. The music room was quite hot and got
hotter as the evening went along, not just from the hot musicians.
More jamming followed shortly after and, eventually, Len Fehs-
kins arrived bringing more midi equipment and a rack to mount keys on.
Len, an excellent drummer, filled the one musical gap that remained.
Until Len's arrival, their were plenty of guitarists and keyboardist's
but only Dave's linndrum for percussion. A formidable instrument, the
Linn drum, but nothing really compares to the flexibility of a fine
drummer. Len filled the role perectly.
So the evening passed on, Dave and Don and Rik taking turns
on guitar and bass, Ed, Don, Karl and Dave on keyboards and Len on
drums.
More jamming ensued, much to the delight of those who love
to free-form jam and much to the chagrin of those who like regimented
"it goes like this" cover tune repititions.
In the early evening, just as the pizza was being ordered, Garret
Marotta and Dave DiAntonio (DDA) arrived with one more piece of equipment.
Another keyboard. What with the room being uncomfortably hot, sweat pour-
ing from everones body, and the over abundance of keyboard players, things
got a little muddled for awhile. People were unsure of what to play next.
Everyone would attempt to start something, anything only to find that every-
one else was starting something in another key, at another tempo. Free-
form improvisation was beggining to lose it's lustre. Dave Dreher took
command at this point and, with Ed Cote's assistance, and the midi-wife's
voice, organized a series of cover tunes for everyone to play. This was
far more successful for the cover-tune it-goes-like-this people than for
the lets-just-pick-a-key-and-jam people. The improvisers quietly left
the room and went to the living room for some air-conditioning and a
movie.
Len Fehskins, being the only drummer and having an admirable at-
titude, never left the drums until the final piece was played. Big
APPLAUSE to/for Len for having the dedication to stay in that HOT room
all that time.
The session finally broke up aroung 10:30. Most everyone began
tearing down their equipment and packing it up. Mixed feelings seemed
to be the order of the evening as to just how successful the session was,
though everyone felt that some measure of success had been achieved.
Thanks to everyone attending.
A big applause to everyone attending.
It was a pleasure meeting and playing with such formidable people
and I hope to be able to do so again.

As the fly on the wall, I was introduced to an Ed Cote....I
think. It may have been Ed ?????? something else but it was cer-
tainly an Ed. I could have sworn it was Ed Cote.
Was there anotehr Ed there?
If so, then it wasn't Ed Cote...it was the other Ed.
But, having gone thru the previous notes, I noticed that Ed
Cote was thinking of bringing a gibson bass and some keys and the
person who claimed to be Ed ?????? at the jam brought a gibson
bass and some keys.
That is a big clue.
I think Ed Cote, who wrote the reply prior to the review
written by the fly on the wall, was just kidding.
any other opinions as to who ed is or how the jam went?

| OK, I admit it. I was there...
All told, it was big fun. Got to put faces on node::names, listen
to some HOT instrumentalists, meet the Midi-wife, ect.
Got to learn something too. You can take all the technology in the
catalog, mix it with n parts good intention, simmer with seasoned
artists and still get noise. Noise is directly proportional to the
number of people attempting to make music. Not that anyone s**ked.
Just the logistics of getting 10 - 12 people cooking at the same
time makes execution difficult.
"... and then it goes to Bm7th."
"Where?"
"... never mind, use E."
Mutiply times 1/2 n (where n = number of attendees) and you get
the picture.
Technically, it went down without a hitch. EVERYTHING went smooth.
(Well, OK, I blew the OS on my Mirage disk, but that's minor.)
Plenty of inputs, PLENTY OF OUTPUT. The only "problem" I observed
was depending on the audio output of the instrumentalists, the Midi-
wife would somehow get an "All-Notes-Off" message. Luckily, this
situation was easily remedied by powering down for an hour or so.
Impressive as she is, I'll think I'll wait until that glitch is
worked out before I pick one up for myself... All joking aside,
Ellen has a great voice. Thanks for 'sitting in'. Alex (the
Midi-Kiddy?) was also impressive. Pounds right away on the Mirage.
Nice kid... go see daddy's mixer.
KMII is one hell of a pianist, is he not?
Yo len, when are you gonna get/invent midi-cymbals?
Rik, you're bad rep as arrogant has been buried. Nice working with
ya.
Edd Cote, you lost your bass chops. Practice more. ("gee, they were
right here a minute ago...")
WHICH ONE OF YOU CRUMBS WALKED OFF WITH MY MADONNA CHARTS?????
Actually, I just forgot it. Dave D, please bring it to work? I'll
make arrangements....
Next time, let's see if we can work out a little something in advance?
I'd really have liked to got a good tape out of all that...

| We need to find some more drummers. KMII was seen to be noodling
about a bit on drums, but it was either me or the LinnDrum most
of the time. I only got one blister and my hand only hurts a little
today (see, electronic drums have this feature - when you can't
hear them, you hit them harder, but that doesn't work, so you just
hurt your hands/forearms/elbows/shoulders/back, and I couldn't hear
my snare most of the time - just the "tap tap" on the pad.
For all of Edd's complaining (was it really you Edd?) this was one
of the more "controlled" jams I've been involved with. There was
almost none of the "the hell with the rest of you, I'm just gonna
sit here and do my thing until everbody else gets fed up and starts
playing with me!" kind of thing that's typical of we're-not-all-in-the-
same-band jams. If we do this again we ought to try to find some
common material. There was a lot of
"Do you know ..."
"No."
And there was a real nice MIDIkitty too.
And Ellen's voice is NOT just a trick of Dave's studio technique.
By gosh and by golly that lady can sing. Do you rent her out to
other producers, Dave?
Thanks to the fly on the wall for the kind words about my drumming;
it's been a few months since I've sat behind a kit, never mind somebody
else's kit ("everything's in the wrong place!"), but my time seems
to be holding steady at the appropriately arrested level. And I
knew ALL the chords!
Now all I want to know is when do we get to hear the tape...
Can we get that '60s era psychedelic drone erased?

416.50 | get it on, bang a drum | BARNUM::RHODES | | Mon Aug 11 1986 18:29 | 11 |
| Gee, if I start a distribution list for the tape I can be the first
one to get it :-). I want to hear it. I'm sorry I missed the whole
extravaganza. I have some neat percussion patches for the DX100.
I want to use 'em some time.
Now where the heck are we gonna find another drummer for the next
one?
Todd. (now_whats_this_about_60's_psycadelia?!?!?!?!?!)

416.51 | Session Report... | JUNIOR::DREHER | Yet, another Don Sharp clone... | Tue Aug 12 1986 02:23 | 57 |
|
Well, KMIDI Jam has come and gone. Thanks to all who came and
attended. The house didn't suffer to badly at all accept for the
pile of beer cans and bottles. Maybe I'll turn them in and buy
a patch cord...
The day consisted of jamming, checking out a piece of gear, listening
to a tape, waiting for Len, cracking open another beer, some more
jammin', etc. The toughest part was figuring out what to play.
Some of the highlites were the second jam with Steve K. on bass,
KM and Ed C. on keys, Rik S. and DD on guitars and Linn on Drums.
This ditti made it to tape and is very listenable. The Midiwife
sang on renditions of Madonna's "Borderline", Stevie Nick's "Stand
Back" and the Motel's "Mission" of Mercy. "Borderline" was the
most organized and made it to tape. Players on this take were
Ed Cote, KM, and Don Sharp on keys, Len on drums "Don't worry, Len,
the vocal mics will pick it up", Rik Sawyer on Bass, Ellen on vocal
and DD on Linn Hihat. After Pizza break the Jam continued with a rendition
Talking Head's "Life During Wartime" featuring Don Sharp on vocals.
On don't remember to many other stand outs accept for the "Sixties
Psycadelia Jam" which somehow made it to tape. As the host I'm
sorry I didn't record more but you know how hosting goes...
Another gem the made to tape was the "Classic Keyboard Soloist Jam",
which was a medly of Bach, Bolero, 2001 and other pieces featuring
KM and Ed Cote, both of whom would sue if I let anybody hear this.
Since this *was* the MIDI Jam, a list of the MIDI equipment gathered
together for this momentous occasion follows:
Yamaha KX88 Midi Keyboard Controler
Roland MKB-200 Midi Keyboard Controler
Yamaha TX7 Tone Generator
Roland MKS-20 Piano Module
Roland Jupiter-6
Roland JX-3P
Yamaha DX21
Ensoniq Mirage
Casio CZ-5000
Roland MC-500
Roland SBX-10
360 Systems MIDI Patcher
Roland TR-707
Roland Octopad
Tama Pads
LinnDrum
Roland SRV-2000
There was also extra guitars, basses and amps. Also Len brought
his Tascam 216 as an extra mixer and a keyboard stand that Ed wanted
to take home. The disapointment was that no one brought anything
made by Mitsubishi.
All in All, I thought a good time was had by all and look forward
to the next whenever. Maybe we all could actually learn something ahead
of time...

416.52 | MIDIMANIA..see devices wrestle for MIDI channels! | CANYON::MOELLER | Threshhold Monkey | Tue Aug 12 1986 16:04 | 33 |
| It's all true. 'From chaos, order'. Dave and Ellen outdid themselves
as hosts, cheerfully allowing their house to be trashed. The sauna
at the hotel I'd been staying at was out of order, but DD's basement
helped me lose at least 3 lbs... I kept eating chips and drinking
beer just to keep my electrolyte level up.
Music... for me, the most satisfying jam of the day was the first,
with Little Steve Klosterman on bass, first Edd and then myself
on keys, and first Rik and then Dave on guitar. Mr. Linn on percussion.
There was room for the music to move, with fewer folks. Rik and
Dave segue'd their guitar parts so smoothly that when the piece
stopped, I was startled to see Dave and not Rik there with his axe.
These guys are hot, and not prone to the 'louder guitar is better
guitar' syndrome.
There was an amusing syndrome present when, just before one piece,
Dave was setting levels on the mixer... I kept about 20% volume
in reserve..'Yeah, Dave, that's as loud as it gets'... sure...
One of the high points for me was Don Sharp pulling us thru two
Talking Heads tunes.. many thanks to Don for letting me use his
KX88/MKS-20 combo. Felt just like home.
another high point was Ellen singing Madonna's 'Borderline'.. I've
been humming it for two days now.
So Dave Dreher now has enough material on tape to get into some
substantial blackmail, especially the Classical Crap Jam... please
Dave, have mercy. a good time was had by all, many thanks to Edd,
Len, Rik, Dave and Ellen, Don et al.

416.53 | Thank you much. | ELGAR::KLOSTERMAN | Stevie K | Tue Aug 12 1986 17:52 | 4 |
| I had a great time. Thanks Dave and Ellen. Nice putting all those
faces with node::name. I regret I couldn't stay very long due prior
commitments, but definitely sign me up for the next one! Thanks, Edd, for
letting me play the Gibson, too! I'd love to hear the tape.

416.54 | yet another participant report | DAIRY::SHARP | Say something once, why say it again? | Wed Aug 13 1986 16:52 | 29 |
| Personally, I had a great time. Thanks to Dave and Ellen for hosting and all
participants for hot licks, enthusiasm, patience, and all-around good
attitude. I look forward to working with any and/or all of you again.
Tom Janzen: You would be amazed, and quite probably appalled, to realize the
extent to which your music and aesthetic principles influence the local rock
music scene.
I thought it went as well as could possibly be expected, considering none of
us had ever played together before, and most had never HEARD each other
before. Quincy Jones did not have this problem when planning the "We Are The
World" sessions. I, for one, spent some time before the jam thinking about
what might work out, but since I didn't know the people who were going to be
there, their abilities, or their equipment I couldn't come up with much.
Next time I would find it much easier.
It's always a problem with THAT MANY musicians and instruments to keep the
mix clean. After a point you can't hear what you're playing; you might as
well just quit. I think the jams tended to fall into this trap, although the
covers for the most part managed to avoid it.
Special mentions:
Len: good transition fills on "Life During Wartime" and "Take Me to the
River"
Edd: good Hammond B-3 figurations on "Take Me to the River"
Rik: excellent rhythm riff on "Space Jam." Too bad we lost it in the
mix.
Don.

416.55 | it's hard to keep up with this NOTES file... | RAJA::SCHMIEDER | | Thu Aug 14 1986 13:32 | 7 |
| Oh. I thought this was to be a MIDI-only jam. Since the only instruments I
like to PERFORM with are my bass guitar, clarinet and alto recorder (plus
acoustic piano when available), I didn't think I was qualified. Oh well,
maybe next time.
