397.0. "CAST YOUR VOTE! COMMUSIC Review Format" by DYO780::SCHAFER (Brad (aka Dr. Fingers)) Thu Jun 19 1986 14:17

    Please vote on how you want to see the COMMUSIC tape reviews handled.
    Even if you have already stated your opinion, please post it again.
    Thanks.

    Here are the issues:

    1. Do we not wait and post reviews as we listen, or wait until
       everyone gets a copy of the master?

	A = DON'T WAIT
       	B = WAIT

    2. Do we have a separate topic for each submitter, or have one
       topic per tape to contain all reviews, opinions, etc.?

        A = SEPARATE TOPICS
       	B = ONE TOPIC PER TAPE

    3. Do we need a separate topic for comments on tape format,
       distribution, engineering of, futures changes, etc.?

	A = YES
	B = NO

    Gee, Karl, I can't believe we differ so radically. And here I thought
    you were a reasonable guy....

    And Brad, how come you haven't voted yet?

    I like c: send comments to the contributor then he can resubmit
    the entirety as a single entry to a topic that is either A or B.

    who needs the tech note?

    If I can make an "out of band" vote, I'd like to vote for Dave's
    suggestion - namely, reviews are submitted to the submitter, who
    oragnizes them and replies to them (perhaps negotiating "behind
    the scenes" to soften the most blatant of the ad hominem attacks),
    and the submitter posts the results according to the outcome of
    votes 1 and 2.

    Since I am overseeing the voting, I feel ineligible to cast a vote.
    Besides, if you wanna get technical, I have already voted by
    determining the categories on which to vote! Isn't dictatorship
    wonderful?  ;-}

Re: ALL

    Are you sure that you want to receive/edit/post comments on your
    own tunes? That doesn't lend for much discussion (or argument,
    if you're the provocative type).  It's also quite self-serving;
    i.e., I won't post comments that I don't like or that I disagree
    with.

    As for the tech-ie topic, I put that in simply because some of you
    might have some decent suggestions for improving the tape that would
    benefit all of us.

    So, if I must vote, I vote:

    	1. A - NOT wait (at least not more than a couple more weeks!)
		Why? Because I forgot to make a copy for myself, and
		I might forget some things I remember now. :-(

       	2. A - SEPARATE topics for each submitter
    		That makes comments on future submissions easier to
    		keep track of, don't you think?

	3. A - YES - let's have a tech-ie topic
    		Why? If for no other reason, so I can learn a few things
		about my recording technique (or lack thereof), so others
		can also learn, and so we have a single repository for
		comments.

    1A -Don't wait
    2b -One note per tape
    3b -No separate tech note

    	I strongly favor the one note one tape suggestion. However,
    I would go even further and suggest that everything concerning
    that one tape (including tracking) be put in the one note.

    	One place to find everything, in chronological order.

397.71A, 2A, 3ADAIRY::SHARPOh no! Not another Don Sharp clone!Thu Jun 19 1986 16:3119
1A - Don't wait. I promise I'll listen with an open mind even if I've
already heard other people's comments. (I'm one of those who reads the book
before he sees the movie.) There's nothing stopping anyone from sending mail
directly to the artist anyway.

2A - one note per contributor. Big deal if one note gets two replies, and
another goes into the 40's. From the liner notes it sounds like there's a
very wide spectrum of contributions. I expect tangents to branch off wildly,
one note per tape would be a morass. Perhaps we could also have a separate
note for the tape as a whole (comments on Brad's selection/sequencing would
go there.)

3A - separate note for technical topics. We sometimes get bogged down in
technicalities, I want to make sure we have a place to focus on this so the
music can be the focus elsewhere. Contributors are free to point out
selections which were without musical content done for technical testing
purposes only.

    1. A - Don't wait.  Let's get this underway.  Just think, if there's
           a bad review, you'll know which tunes to fast forward by...;^)
           I got my asbetos suit ready...

    2. B - Lets keep it in one ongoing not. I don't want to have to
    	   write seperate notes for each contributer, but write a comment
    	   on all submissions in one note. Also, we might want to make
    	   comparisons about different submissions in the same note.

    3. C - All of the above. Makes no difference to me.

    3 A What's one more note? As long as it's a review of the tape
         engineering, not the submissions' engineering.

    1 - Don't wait.
    2 - One note per tape. I'd rather keep my comments together in one
    reply.
    3 - Another note for technical discussions sounds like a good idea.

    that cluster. My user name is just ARNOLD. Thanks.)
