| I have some patches I could share with folks too.
Give up on the sax patch. There are certain instruments whose
sound is so much a function of playing style and interaction with
the musician that attempts to duplicate them on a keyboard synth
are doomed to frustration. Among them, sax and electric guitar.
Likewise brushes on a snare drum, which you'll never get, even out
of a sampler. You can get "sax-like" sounds, but you'll never be
fooled into thinking it's real, like you can with some flute or
harpsichord patches. Sorry to sound so defeatist, but I've been
looking for a synthetic sax for a long time now.

295.2 | the sound that you're hearing... | BARTOK::ARNOLD | John E. Arnold | Thu Apr 03 1986 17:56 | 29 |
| I think patch sharing would be a great idea (even if it's only a
parameter list or diagram representation)! Perhaps a separate note for
each of the major synth types could be started specifically for patches.
(Maybe that will convince me to perform "spring cleaning" on my studio,
sell some lesser-used stuff, and get one of these new whiz-bang synths!)
At the risk of further degenerating down the saxaphone road, I can't
help but recount a story where I was completely fooled into thinking that
something was an electric saxaphone...
I've been a fan of Traffic for quite some years. I remember listening
to Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys for eons thinking that the late, great
Chris Wood had come up with yet another unique sound of his sax playing
through a distortion box or "blown" amp for much of the soloing. The
attack, the breathiness; without ever questioning it, I presumed that was
a processed saxaphone.
I was floored when 2 or 3 years ago I read an interview with Steve
Winwood where he talked about playing those solos on a distorted Hammond
organ. Back to the turntable and, what do you know, if you really pay
attention, you can sort of hear that it's an organ (occasionally trading
riffs with the sax). Oh well. Admittedly, a Cannonball Adderley solo
would be (almost) impossible to pull off on a synth without it sounding
like a synth. If you change the context of the sound so it's OK to just
remind you of a sax, however, it might be OK.
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents,
- John -

295.4 | | NOVA::RAVAN | | Thu Apr 03 1986 20:13 | 17 |
| I've been told that the sax patch on the DX-7 sounds a lot better
if you use the breath controller, especially one that has been
used often and is broken in. I haven't tried it, but we all understand
the problem: attack envelopes. Some folks call 'em 'signatures'.
The signature of a sax (as was implied in .1) is so complex and
varies so much in a single phrase that something like a breath control
is necessary to get close to the right different shapes to all the
different attack signatures required. The other problem of doing
reeds well is the further complication that for every different
attack signature, there is a corresponding frequency envelope.
Yes, this is true of every 'traditional orchestral' instrument,
but it always seems to be worst in trying to get good reed sounds.
(and to digress even farther from the original topic, I've also
heard that the breath controller helps the voice sound on the DX-7.)

| Back to the original topic (patch swapping) and as file moderator,
feel free to create a note for each 'significantly different' group
of synths. I'd expect one note for the DX-7/9/5/21/100/TX series,
one for Oberheim Matrix-6/12/Xpander (yes they're different,
but they're cousins), one for Casio-101/1000/3000/5000, etc.
And to reiterate, just be careful not to infringe on any copyrights.

COMMENT: I like this sound using portamento on time=07. Edited from preset 1
not harsh at all like the bass preset. Sharper attack than the brass.
The vibrato is just an added program that can be transfered to other programs.
It is really neat if the sound has a long release on the DCA after the sustain.
The vibrato is optional and may be altered to your liking.

295.15 | preamble to two CZ-101 harpsichord patches | RAJA::SCHMIEDER | | Thu May 08 1986 15:18 | 51 |
| While I'm waiting for my three-hundred page printout, I might as well do
something mildly useful. I'm accessing COMMUSIC using /NONOTEBOOK, though,
as I only have time to do what I came in here for.
On Sunday, I spent two to three hours putting the finishing touches on some
harpsichord patches, my favourite two of which will follow this reply. The
basic sound was pretty easy to achieve, and I'm not at all certain that I
didn't achieve some better sounds on the path to the ones I wound up with.
I reviewed my clarinet and e-violin patches, and want to edit them some
before sharing them.
There are an endless number of harpsichord sounds available on the CZ-101.
Also, I accidentally created a harp sound while making the harpsichord
sound, but I was too foolish to save it as I didn't want to be side-tracked.
Anyway, the most important thing is to select 1+2', select very fine detuning
two octaves above the fundamental and deselect vibrato (harpsichord strings
are plucked rather than struck, and have little if any vibrato).
Next most important thing is to select 3 as the first DC0 1/2 waveform,
and any combination of 6 through 8 as the second. The envelope should stay
at the maximum rate no matter how many steps, and probably shouldn't exceed
three steps. No sustain on one oscillator, with sustain on the other.
The level of step one of DCO 2 will affect the colour of the sound; too
high a value will get you further away from emulating a true acoustic
sound.
The key follow on should be anything between 5-9 on DCW 1 and anything between
0-4 on DCW 2. The values should be spaced apart somewhat, and sound more
realistic towards the centre of the range. This time the envelope should
go abruptly from the highest rate (99) to the lowest (00), with the level
somewhere towards the centre of the scale (around 50).
The same thing applies to key follow on DCA, although this time the values
towards the ends of the range give better results. A four to five step
envelope is necessary here in order to properly emulate the sound that
the harpshichord strings make when they are released (you know, that airy
thunkping sound that sound almost like a key on the keyboard got temporarily
stuck and then snapped back into place). You can play around with the
sustain on this one; whether it occurs and where it occurs (also, whether
it is used on one or both waveform generators) will determine the most
subtle colouration of sound.
I haven't had time to check these since Sunday, but feel confident about
the description above so feel that people could use the above description
to produce good harpsichord patches even if the ones I have provided below
aren't any good.

Comments: The heart of the pipe organ sound is the doubling a couple of
octaves up. I chose to do that in this patch by using the DCO pitch
envelope rather than the detune parameters (I had a good reason at the
time, I don't remember what it was). The modest detuning fattens the
sound a little, so it sounds like more than one pipe. Overall this is
a very simple but effective patch. You can manipulate the timbre to
your liking by changing the DCW envelope levels. The noninstantaneous
DCA envelope rates soften the onset and simulate some hall ambience.
A good reverb still helps enormously.

295.20 | new CZ template for LN03 | XYLAR::MARSHALL | | Thu Jun 12 1986 09:56 | 25 |
| I just picked up a CZ-101 recently and I think it's super. Originally,
I only wanted a keyboard(elec piano or equiv.) to have in the corner
to help me figure out things on my guitar, but I found a good deal
on the CZ and I find myself spending a copious amount of time on
the thing.
After typing in many patches from the one of the Casio books, I became
frustrated with the layout of their Sound Data pages, so I drew
up a new layout/template of my own on my VAXstation. It is layed
out in the same block diagram as the parameter sections of the synth.
If you have an LN03 hanging off of your VAX you can copy the sixel
file and print it out just as you would print out a text file.
If you have access to a VAXstation, you can copy the binary data
file and modify it as you like using MAGGIE_tosh(look in the VWS
notesfile on BULOVA.) Enjoy!
the sixel file:
XYLAR""::SYS$PUBLIC:SOUND_DATA.SIX (for an LN03)
and the data file:
XYLAR""::SYS$PUBLIC:SOUND_DATA.DAT (for MAGGIE_tosh)

COMMENT: This sound was developed to improve one of the factory internals.
It has been quite useful to me as an all-around string sound with that slight
difference that makes it just a bit unusual. I used the pitch envelope
to get that "chiff" sound. It probably could have been done with
the noise modulator, but once I got the sound I wanted, I didn't
bother checking out a "more correct way".

| Just a comment on the fly...
I just purchased on of the "switchable bank" CZ RAM cartridges
(the kind with 64 memory locations) for $39.95! That's what many
people still ask for on the 16-memory cartridges. So if you live
in the Eastern Mass area, check out R|S|F Music in Cambridge. I'd
strongly suggest calling first, though. They go fast at that price.
I went on a Saturday after having them tell me they had 'em in stock
on Friday - they were sold out. Fortunately, they shipped one out
from the next order at no shipping charge when I told them I had
called beforehand. I got it within a week. I was impressed!

TWO COMMENTS
1. If you call CASIO in Fairfield NJ (I don't know the exit) they
will send you ***FOR FREE!!!*** a book which explains their entire
MIDI implementation, and is also a pretty good beginners guide to
MIDI for just about any instrument.
2. I am looking for a REALLY GREAT PIANO PATCH!!!!!!!
What is the best that can be done?
Also a question> If I use my CZ101 on batteries (new DURACELLS)
the low battery warning seems to start flashing after about 3 hours,
but there is no indication that the batteries are really low. Should
I worry? How long do DURACELLS or the like really last?
Thanks,
Rich Goldstein

The best piano? Easy: an MKS20.
(hate to sound like a wise-*** but, couldnt resist.)
On my Cz5000 I've learned to settle for a good dx7-ish
elec. piano...
good luck.

| For those of you who do not subscribe to the USENET, here are some
patches I received recently. Tried some ... interesting ... pressure
of work (sob, sob) keeps me from doing much at the moment though!
See what you think.
It's kinda long (1710+ lines), so if space is a problem MR Moderator,
perhaps you should delete it, as I'd be happy to MAIL anyone who is
interested, that missed out.

Comments: I put the three different versions (different detune octave
settings) on adjacent Internal memory keys , and by switching back
and forth between beats (it takes practice) I got a "drum kit", and
even gated off some of the hits by switching to the next sound before
the note had died out. Primitive, but it got on the local college
station a few times. This is one of those sounds that sounds really
big on tape.

Here's a whole slew of CZ patches that appeared in today's
rec.music.synth. I removed the headers and put a form feed
between the patches. NOTE: they are in many different
formats and some don't have titles so it may be somewhat
interesting getting through these things. Enjoy!

This sounds kind of like the laser fire in a cheap video game.
To change the number of shots fired each time you push a key,
change the rate of DCA 1, STEP 5.
To vary the speed at which shots are fired, vary the vibrato
rate (most effective if you do this while playing.)

Comments:
This sound creates a "high-to-low" filter sweep in discrete increments
(hence, glissando) each time a key is pressed. The sweep is most noticable
in the lower range of the keyboard. For really gothic song intros,
try setting DETUNE OCTAVE to -1 and playing single notes going slowly
>from high to low on the keyboard.
(Notice that the parameter values of this sound are very similar
to those of Space Shots. By tweaking the vibrato, DCO1, DCA1
it becomes a semi-musical sound.)

| RE: .30
I assume your reply means you tried the ones I posted earlier in this note and
didn't like them. There is supposed to be a professionally designed harpsichord
patch in the package that was mentioned in yet another note, part of a hundred
or so other patches. Someone here ought to remember the information on that;
I think I located it once doing a "dir/title="cz101" or "dir/title="patch".
My harpsichord patches really stink, and unfortunately were better before I
tweaked them too much. Wish I had saved the preliminary patches before I
ruined them. If you find some good patches that aren't copyrighted, I will
be interested in seeing them as well (hopefully posted in this note).

I thought I had extracted all the CZ patches already, but I don't
remember running across the "hundred or so". I think I've seen a couple
dozen. I'll look some more.
If I find anything worthwhile, or can tweak one of them into something
worthwhile, I'll post it here.

| RE: .32
Sorry, I must have given the impression that the hundred or so CZ patches were
in this file! What I meant was someone mentioned a mail-order number to call
for a published book full of LOTS (number escapes me) of
professionally-designed CZ patches.
I haven't bought it yet, or extracted the more recent patches posted here that
were in the harder-to-read format, because I'm not certain I'm going to hang
on to my CZ101 even as a MIDI-driven keyboard. I just have this feeling that
Casio's going to be coming out with a backwards-incompatible replacement that
will dry up the support for the CZ101 in terms of new patches/etc.
My honeymoon with the CZ ended long ago, but not as quickly as with other
keyboards I have owned. I didn't think $400 was too bad when I bought it, got
pretty upset when the price dropped below $200, but right now I could sure use
the money.
I'm glad I bought it, though, because it helped me to learn about synthesis.
I don't think I would have learned as much on a (more expensive) Roland or
Korg. And, with digital delay, some of the sounds still sound decent to me.
One of the best sounds is the church organ sound that Len Fehskens developed
and posted earlier in this note. I haven't gotten sick of that one yet.

| Re: .33
You were right, Mark. There were a bunch that I had somehow missed,
including the two harpsichord patches. I haven't had a chance to
try them yet.
I originally bought my CZ simply as an intro synth. I don't play
keyboards, and simply wanted to play with it. Like most people,
when I heard the factory presets, I was underwhelmed, but it was
a great buy for the money (I paid $300). I've since found that it
has a LOT more capability than I really expected.
I'm primarily interested in tunes, not "sounds" per se, so there
are already more than enough patches than I'll ever need...probably.

COMMENTS: Since everyone seems to want/have a piano sound on the CZ, I thought
I'd throw in my 2 worth. It sounds pretty good to my ears, but I'd be
interested in hearing any comments or suggestions. Also, there's a couple of
variations to this patch. Adding ring mod will give a slightly brighter,
thinner sound. Using only the 1 voice select will give you (on the CZ-101)
eight notes and still a decent piano sound. The detune gives a nice chorus
effect, you might want to play with the "fine" parameter for different speeds.
Moving the "end" point of DCA 1 envelope produces some interesting sustain
effects. Set at step 6 it sounds as if you're holding a sustain pedal, and at
step 7 you get a very *looong* sustain effect.

This is the piano voice I've been using lately, but the one in the
previous reply looks interesting. I'm looking forward to trying that
one as well.
My goal is to come up with an 8-note polyphonic piano patch. I've got
a CZ-1000, and with the larger keys, it's more tempting to try and
play it like an acoustic piano. 4-note piano voices just don't do it.
Of course, trying to get a nice bright piano voice without the DETUNE
function makes it pretty tough. There's not much to this one, but
it's a start.

295.39 | Help with reproducing templates | LOLITA::DIORIO | | Tue Jul 28 1987 18:19 | 11 |
| Soon I will be entering a bunch of new patches that I worked out
on my newly acquired CZ101. Can some one tell me how to reproduce
the CZ patch template here with a minimum of work? There has to
be a better way than putting all those dots and dashes in from scratch.
Is there a way to extract the template from a previous reply, store
it in a buffer, and transfer it to this reply? If there is a way,
could someone please detail how to do it (send me a mail message
if you wish). So far I have created 8 new patches...and expect to
working on more this week.

295.40 | FORWARD the template | NIMBUS::DAVIS | | Wed Jul 29 1987 10:19 | 9 |
| I think what you want to do is use FORWARD to mail one of the previous
replys to yourself and then extract the template from the VAX mail. You
can then you your favorite text editor to make multiple copies of the
template and type in all your patches. When the file (or multiple
files) is ready you can specify the complete file name (including your
node) with the REPLY command to bring it back into notes.

| I extracted note .7 to get the template which is in the next reply.
Juset do
extract file.name
when you are at the template note. Edit the template, and enter
it with
reply fine.name

295.44 | My first 8 CZ101 patches | LOLITA::DIORIO | | Mon Aug 03 1987 15:09 | 454 |
| Here are the 8 patches. These are my first attempts at programming the
CZ-101, although I've had lots of experience programming analog synths. I
would appreciate any feedback on these patches....e.g. which ones you like,
which ones you don't like and why. This will help me improve the next group
of patches that I submit. Thanks.. Mike D.

COMMENTS: This was an attempt at a sax sound, that didn't quite work out,
but hopefully you'll find some use for it as I did. Sounds best
(to me) from C1 to Bb4. Above that it sounds too flute-ish.

COMMENTS: This bass sound is not for the faint of heart! Unfortunately has
a limited good-sounding range of from F1 to F3 (approximately).
This sound is a variation of Ring Modulo 1. The envelope is not
intended to be that of a bass guitar. "Bass" in this context only
refers to the range, not the 4-stringed instrument.

the ones that use lines 1+1', I listed out all the DCO2 signal path
parameters, when they are actually irrelevant. This is true. Sorry
for the unnecessary information...and thanks to the person who told
me about this. I am a little embarrassed, but at least I learned
something! Keep those cards and letters (Electronic mail) coming!

295.47 | 8-note polyphonic piano | CAD::MERLETTE | | Mon Aug 17 1987 14:33 | 68 |
| RE: .38
I took a course in Computer Music last semester and I learned just
how hard it is to synthesize a good piano sound. Two classmates of mine tried
in vain to do it with Fourier Analysis. There seems to be just too many
parameters to take into account. (eg., the resonance of the other strings
when one key is pressed). Even sampled piano sounds are good only at the
note they were sampled on. I found the task of creating an 8-note polyphonic
piano sound on the CZ-101 interesting enough to pursue. My result is given
below. It's been a long time since I heard a real piano, but I hope this
is close. Enjoy!

COMMENT: This is modified from the Electric Piano Preset. If you select
Preset #5 and change the line select from 1+2' to 2 and turn the volume on
max, you get a fair sounding piano. What I did was basically copy the
envelopes of line 2 into line1 and changed the DCA to approximate a piano
envelope. (Perhaps using all 8 steps would offer a better approx.) It seems
that the middle registers sound the best.

295.48 | Piano Revisited/Goodbye | CAD::MERLETTE | | Fri Aug 28 1987 09:29 | 18 |
| One of the reasons synthesized piano sounds lack that "real feel"
is that the initial sound of the hammer striking the string is missing.
It occurred to me that maybe this effect could be done with the
aid of a sampling drum machine (the RZ-1 immediately comes to mind).
By sampling the sound of the hammer striking the string and playing
this drum sample for every note using the piano patch, I'd bet some
sort of realism could be added. I haven't tried this myself, but
I will as soon as I get back to school (where there's a real piano!)
Speaking of school (if you haven't figured this out already)
I'm a summer hire and today is my last day :-(
I've really enjoyed this notesfile, particularly this note.
I've learned a great deal from this notesfile, and I only hope that
someone out there has found my replies helpful. Hopefully I'll
return next summer! Until then, keep interfacing!

| Great idea, Darryle. Very similar to the D50 style of synthesis, using
a sampled initial sound, and a synthesized following. Sounds like it
will take lots of work to get it to sound right, tho.
Good luck back at school...

295.50 | Everybody wants a piano.... | JAWS::COTE | Practice Safe Sysex | Fri Aug 28 1987 09:53 | 10 |
| How do you propose to get just the sound of the "hammer" and not
get any "string"?
A big problem people run into when sampling pianos is that the initial
hammer thwack gets transposed over the length (in keys) of the sample.
Better piano samples are always multi-sampled.
On DX type machines you can dedicate a carrier to hammer thwack.

You mean your synth doesn't have keyboard follow for oscillator

Well, don't despair, most don't. The only one I've run into is
the Polaris, which could even map the keyboard backwards!

| Er, you get keyboard follow for free on an ESQ- but you can undo
it by adding KBD2 to the pitch at -63.
Then, you modulate the pitch with VEL2, at -63. Result- a patch
that sounds high when you hit it hard, low when soft, and keyboard
position has approximately no effect on!
Very annoying to "conventional" keyboardists...

What are all you CZ owners out there using for bass sounds? I've been
borrowing a bass guitar from a friend and when I give it back I was
hoping to use my CZ-1000 as a fillin until I get around to buying my
own bass. I've already been using the CZ as a bass in some songs, but
I've had trouble finding a nice clear bass patch that's full and clear
without being boomy. All the canned "fat" bass sounds just don't do it
for me.
After messing around a lot, I ended up coming back to one
of the patches described in the Sound Data book that comes with the
CZ--it's called the Wood Bass patch. But even that one falls down
if you're not in just the right octave.
What's your favorite CZ bass patch? If you have your own, how about
posting it?

295.56 | New CZ Patch Dump From the USENET | AQUA::ROST | I feel your innuendo | Wed Jan 20 1988 11:46 | 1024 |
| Here are some new CZ patches that came over USENET this morning.
Obviously, I haven't heard these yet, so I can't vouch for quality.
They were part of a CZ patch archive dump, the others are already posted
elsewhere in this note.
BTW, most of the patches I've tried from this note so far are great,
particularly Len's pipe organ and Mike's "Lucky Man" Moog. These patches
put the Casio factory patches to shame.
I'm currently trying to get a Mellotron patch together but it may be
nearly impossible.....I did come up with a Lowrey organ patch for you Soft
Machine/Caravan/Pink Floyd fans, though. Also struggling to get some
decent drum sounds, I'm too cheap to buy a drum machine. :-) :-)

Note: I didn't write down the octave setting, but when set up
correctly there will be this surprise "clank" somewhere in the second
octave of the keyboard, and a more electronic-drum-like bash on the
low C. Reuben had this timed to go with the snare on his TR-707, and
the resulting clank sounded like a Depeche Mode sample. In fact, I
*thought* he was doing this on his Prophet 2000, it sounded so good.
4) MIDI looping?
Yup. If you want to fatten up a sound, try running a cable
from MIDI OUT to MIDI IN. It's not like digital delay, it's real
doubling (again due to the CZ MIDI-playback end-play bug/feature that
throws the timing off by a different random amount every time). It
improves some sounds and deteriorates others, but get a Radio Shack
MIDI cable and try it, it's worth it!

Comments: "Choral oooh" was a semi-successful experiment to see if
something close to vocals could be obtained. As you CZ
owners know, the "human voice" preset sounds ok, but not
at all like a human voice. "Choral oooh" sounds something
like a person singing "oooh" (long u sound). It is not
perfect, but I think you will find it outclasses the human
voice preset by far. This voice sounds best when you play
major chords on the middle-high octave range.

Comments: "Reverb Strings" is a modification of the preset "Synth
Strings". The "reverb" comes from playing the note not
only when a key is pressed, but also when the key is
released. Try holding a chord and then letting off the
keys one at a time, and you will hear the effect. With
a little practice on the timing of pressing and releasing
the keys, you can get some interesting effects such as
eight eighth notes when only when four eighth notes
separated by eighth rests are played.

same name. If the sound comes across too sweet for your taste, reduce
the Fine Detune to around 09 for a more piano-like sound. Some slow
modulation delayed to the tail-end of the sound adds a different
dimension, too." -_MT_

| re .56 - check out the latest Electronic Musician for a set of drum
patches for the CZ family synths. I programmed up a few of them
and they're quite good, considering. They sound synthetic (i.e.,
like a Simmons kit), but if that's acceptable to you then they're
very good.
Oh, yes, thanks for the kind words about my organ.

| Hello again!
I'm a returning summer student and last year I really enjoyed this
entry. Unfortunately, I haven't noticed much activity here lately.
I have some randomly generated CZ101 patches which I will post as
soon as I can. I hope I will not be alone (hint, hint).
keep having fun,

I seem to recall seeing a few postings for Casio CZ patches on this net,
so I will assume that there is at least _some_ audience for these patches.
Here are a few of my own, which I think some of you might enjoy:

I recently purchased a CZ-101 with the knowledge that it was being
discontinued. For the price, I figured it would be a good first
synthesizer for use with my pdp-11 (oh for an RS-232 to MIDI
converter).
Its good to see a patch trade note. I hope there is one on
programming/use tips (I'm still just looking through the file, I
just found it).

295.62 | Go with it | TYFYS::MOLLER | TAICS / You Are Number 6 | Tue Aug 09 1988 15:35 | 17 |
| I like my CZ-101 & Find that it still has lots of power. Mine has 3
years worth of mileage on it & I plan to keep using it (In fact, I'd
like to find another one - I wish that there was a rack version,
I'd love to add it to my rack of goodies). There are a few good books
on programming & patches. The one that is mentioned in this notes
file (350 patches) has some nice sounds in it, however, expect that
at least 70% of the free, or published patches for the CZ to be
mediocre, or of limited value. My favorite use of my CZ is for
Animal sounds & things (like Jets landing, or trains driving by).
I use the peculiar sounds more than anything else, because it adds
effect. Ain't that what a Synth is for??
I really hate the keypad entry, but then, I think most front panel
access to the inside workings of current Digital synth's were based
on some of ther Marquis DeSade's principals of cruelty.

I read all the patches for the CZ101 synth, contained in a earlier
note, and found only TWO that tried to duplicate the sound of an
electric guitar. There has got to be more! Somebody help a new
synth owner with no programming ability (not to much playing ability
as well).
