277.0. "Tascam 388/Fostex 8-track" by MOSAIC::SAVAGE () Fri Mar 21 1986 12:33

    Any of you out there own the Tascam 388 or the Fostex 8-track and
    mixer?

    If so how about some comments/thoughts.

    I have a Fostex 8-track and mixer. They are my first 8-track recorder
    and my first mixer, so I can't compare them to anything. On an
    absolute scale, I like them both very much. It took me a while
    to learn how to operate the mixer, but I can now do anything I want.
    (To be sure, I don't want much. But I have done some unusual things
    with it, as well as simple things.) I did have trouble with crosstalk
    from my SMPTE track, but I solved that by feeding the SMPTE track
    directly from the tape deck to the SBX-80, bypassing the mixer.

    I also like the 8-track tape. I've got SMPTE on track 8, and I
    haven't had to re-record it in spite of recording over the other
    seven tracks several times. The tape counter isn't too repeatable,
    but when I need repeatability I use the SMPTE readout from the SBX-80
    so that isn't a major problem. My only real gripe is that I can't
    adjust the start time of one track relative to another. I don't
    get upset about this because I realize that it is an inherent
    limitation of multi-track tape technology.
