258.0. "Hot news from Casio." by BEAGLE::MULELID () Sat Mar 01 1986 11:58

    I just saw in a french music magazine some short (very short)
    news from Casio. There where three things mentioned first
    a "Digital sampling rythm composer" called RZ-1. It uses PCM
    and have 12 preprogramed sounds, TOM1, TOM2, TOM3, BASS DRUM,
    SNARE DRUM, RIM, OPEN HH, CLOSED HH, CLAPS, RIDE, COWBELL
    and CRASH. Then there is something called SAMPLE 1,2,3 and 4.
    It is of course MIDI, and it have independent volume control
    for each sound. No price mentioned, nor date available.

    Next thing was the sampler called SK-1, which I think has been
    mentioned earlier in some note. This looks like a small toy
    keyboard.

    Then there is the last and probably most interresting piece.
    This is called ZZ-1, and is a "Digital Sampler". It is a rack
    mount unit, must be MIDI because there are no keyboard. From
    the picture it looks like there is a small floppy drive built
    into the unit in the lower right end corner. It says something
    about 8 bits, dont know what.

    I would be VERY interrested if anybody else knows something
    about these units.

258.18 Bits is Probably the PCM "Width"ERLANG::FEHSKENSMon Mar 03 1986 09:4811
    The "8 bits" probably means the sampler uses 8 bits to encode the
    samples. This is not a whole lot unless some kind of companding
    technique is used - an 8 bit linear code will give you about 48
    db of dynamic range which is, as I said, not a whole lot. Of
    more interest though is the sampling rate and maximum sample
    length.

    These things do sound interesting though!

258.2More info on Casio.BEAGLE::MULELIDMon Apr 28 1986 07:0717
    I just found some more info on the RZ-1 and ZZ-1. They where both
    suposed to shown of in a music fair in Frankfurt, Germany.
    Only the RZ-1 showed up, and it is on sale as.

    For the ZZ-1 it was not shown but some more data have been printed.
    It can use four different sampling frequencies. At 40 kHz it can
    sample 3 sec, 20 kHz is 6 sec, 10 kHz 24 sec and finally at 5 kHz
    you can sample 24 seconds. It can store 8 sounds at one time, and
    it also have 8 splits. After sampling you can edit start and stop
    points, envelope, release (looping), vibrato, reverse playback.
    It does not say how many bits the a/d converter is, could be 8 or
    12 bits. Still no info on price or release date.

    I will put in more if I find something.

258.3No, I don't want to buy one, I'm just curious!AKOV75::EATONDFinally, a piano.Tue Sep 08 1987 16:225

	Has anyone heard any more about the ZZ-1 described earlier?
