In preparation for 'going MIDI', I have taken my Chroma and expander in for repairs and a software upgrade. The upgrade consists of replacing a set (number unknown) of EPROMs at a cost of $250 per instrument!! For just the chips! Is this typical? When I spoke to the technician, he said that this price INCLUDES a discount he's getting for returning the old chips. - Karl

Karl, I can't say for sure on your synth, but I had been told about the MIDI dynamics upgrade for my JX3 by a dealer who wanted $150 to do the job. The eproms are available through Roland at $49.95 for the same upgrade. Could be a healthy profit in there for the installer, but maybe not. MIDI should require some significant amount of overhaul to install in a non-MIDID synth. Good luck with it! dave |
