I just bought a TASCAM Porta-1 mini-studio. Since I don't have a lot of other equipment, I have been getting creative with miking techniques trying to get a decent sound. Last weekend we ended up with a Fender Bandmaster in the bathroom, with one mike right in front of the speaker, and one above and behind the speaker. I cut most of the bass out of the direct-mike channel, and most of the treble out of the other. It ended up sounding quite good. We used a direct box for the bass guitar, either plugged directly into the guitar, or into the booster output of a Peavy Bass amp. With the Peavy, you can add harmonics if you want. I'd like to hear your experiences with lo-budget recording. I bet there's some good stories out there. -Jeff

Have you had problems with the DBX switch on your Porta-One? My Porta-One started making hissing noises that sounded like the DBX wasn't working. About about wo days of it happening, we found we could "kick" it back into working by bouncing on either the rewind or fastforward buttons while in play mode. Took it back to the Music Workshop in Nashua where it was purchased, and they said they'd probably have to send it to Japan for repairs - 3 weeks to 6 months! We have a replacement unit while it's being repaired, but after about a week, this one has developed the same symptom. Anybody got any ideas, or heard of other problems? -Dave |
