174.0. "IBM and MIDI Control" by SPHINX::SAVAGE () Tue Nov 05 1985 13:18

Have any of you used an IBM PC as a MIDI controller?

What hardware did you plug in to get it done?

What software did you use?

Does anyone know what is available for the IBM system in terms of hard/software?

Thanks-

/Dennis Savage

Funny you should ask ...

There's a pretty extensive article in the fall issue of BYTE.
     Title is "A MIDI Recorder".

This guy uses Roland's MPU 401 and PC/Forth.

Supposedly there's a lot of other s/w out there for the ibm PC.
     Anyone know more?

Well I guess the IBM just isn't a popular machine with this crowd, eh?

But as it happens that's what I have so here's what I've decided to do:

IBM XT computer
Roland MPU-401 with IBM adapter to get MIDI running hardware wise
Cherry Lane Textra Software

The Midi Hard and Software is $400 plus shipping from Manny's.

Casio CZ-101 @$299 from same source.
Roland Juno 106 @$689 from same source.
Roland TR-707 @$475 from same source.
Teac 234 Cassette Machine @$695 from same source.

Excluding the PC it comes to $2558 plus a little shipping.

I think this will be a good system and if I need some more in the way of
sound sources I'll be able to expand later.

I've used the 234 and the 707 for awhile now and they are both just super.
I hope the 101 and the 106 will be nice machines...

Thanks for the interest... Happy Music Making

re .2 - I've got both a 101 and a 106 and I think you'll be very happy with
both machines. Note that both support system exclusive access to the
programming interface so you can do voice management on the PC.
