169.0. "PAIA again" by KATADN::BOTTOM () Thu Oct 24 1985 09:52

I know that PAIA kits have been discussed elsewhere in this file but I
wanted to make a quick comment based on my very recent experince.
I have in the last two weeks received two kits from PAIA the dual
limiter and the hot springs reverb. Both kits were missing parts. PAIA
will replace them but I'm now waiting for these parts.

Has anyone else experienced these problems with PAIA? I'm a little
disapointed with them.

good tunes

UUGGHH! I bought a mono synth kit from PAIA (should be PIA for pain in the
ass!) about four years ago. After waiting for almost six months, I finally
received the kit from ups. They kept telling me that they were out of
frames for the kit and it had to be built. When I got it, the frame turned
out to be a chinsey made piece of crap made out of fiber board and pine.
It probably took them fifteen minutes to make it and I waited six months
for it. Anyway I quickly opened everything up to start building only to
find that they had failed to send me some of the electronics. I went
to Radio Shack because I didn't feel like waiting another six months!
As it turned out it took me another month after building the kit to
get it working because some of the parts that they did send me were
either no good or were of the wrong specs. Needless to say, I have never
delt with them since, and would not recomend anyone else that I knew
to do so either.

MY EXPERIENCES WITH PAIA HAVE ALL BEEN PLEASANT; I.E., NO
MISSING PARTS, PLEASANT, KNOWLEDGABLE PHONE TECHNICIANS, AND, OVERALL,
A WELL-DESIGNED PRODUCT. I'VE BUILT A STEREO LIMITER, A SYNTH AND
SOME OTHER KITS. MY NEXT WILL BE THE "HOT SPRINGS" REVERB (MR&M MAGAZINE,
NOV. '85). SURPRISED THAT SO MANY FOLKS HAD BAD EXPERIENCES, YOU MAKE ME
PARANOID. MAYBE I SHOULDN'T BUY ANY MORE FROM THEM....

I figured I'd post a follow up to my original.

I got the missing parts for the Limiter and built it. It didn't seem to
work. I got a scope home and it did in fact work but the directions have
you hook up the pots so that the controls work backwards. I can't
believe that PAIA is not aware of this problem.
As far as it's overall quality this limiter is of limited (sorry) value.
It can be driven into distortion very easily and lacks clarity of sound.
I don't believe that this is due to bad parts as I now know why recordings
made at a friend of mine's studio also lack clarity, he uses these limiters
as well. So I hereby apologise to Fostex as I had thought that the
problem was his tape deck.

Would I buy from PAIA again? Not the limiter, probably not at all.
