123.0. "Synclavier info needed" by BETA::HALL () Tue Jul 30 1985 16:38

I'm posting this for my friend Bob LeMieux.

He is in the process of buying a used Synclavier that comes without a
terminal. Apparently New England Digital wants exhorbitant sums of money
for their terminal, which is supposed to be a VT100 with a DQ640M-00 graphics
kit from Digital Engineering consisting of a CRT and a driver board. The
resolution is 480 x 800 pixels, and NED calls it a "VT640". He put money
down on a used VT100 with the intention of buying the graphics kit directly
from Digital Engineering, but apparently they've gone Chapter 11. I've asked
him if any VT100 compatible terminal with high-res graphics can be used and he
says no, but doesn't know why. What he wants is a lead on a new or used
DQ640M-00. What I would like is a description of how the terminal on the
Synclavier interfaces with the rest of the system, what it controls, and why
the system is supposedly dedicated to the "VT640" terminal.

While it is a bit late...

The VT640 is a Tek 4014 emulator with one important enhancement:
write complement mode which allows selective erasure of a screen.
Digital Engineering is Chapter 11 now but a company called
National Computer Corporation in Connecticut has purchased the
manufacturing and sales rights ( I don't recall their location ).

Trying a standard 4014 or one of its emulators may give tolerable
    results ( but I doubt it ).

Oh and the prices are $1500 for the 640 board and 750 for a vt100.

VT240 is sort of a 4014 emulator; being a very close emulator, it
has no complement mode writing. The '640 is just a board that sits
between the '100's electronics and the serial line. When it sees
a 4014 sequence, it stops channeling characters to the 100's
electronics and begins 4014 emulation in its own bitmap. The two
video images are then mixed and sent to the monitor. Quick and
easy and VERY useful at the time ('70's).
