| There was an article about the Kurzweil 250 in "High Technology", Feb. 85.
It is entitled "KURZWEIL'S KEYBOARD, A high tech entrepeneur weds electronic
controls and acoustic sounds in a bid to revolutionize the world of musical
instruments". (hype, hype)
If you can't find a copy of the magazine in your library, send me Email
including your DEC mailstop and I'll Xerox you a copy.

| Another very interesting article about Ray Kurzweil's work in general
is in this month's OMNI.

| Jim -
What makes you say it's 'hype'? I've played on it. It's a
pretty amazing machine.
BTW, Ensonics has a $1700 synth ('Mirage') that is supposed
to rival the Kurzweil. Digital sampling is included in the price! I
haven't heard/played it yet, but I'm curious.

| I didn't intend to cast a cloud of disfavor over the instrument. I haven't ever
heard it, so it wouldn't be fair to do so. I *was* trying to indicate that I
thought the author (or maybe his editor) were using "LOOK AT THIS! OH WOW! OH
WOW!" tactics in their sub-title just to get you to read it. I suppose there's
nothing wrong with that, but I do get tired of seeing the same kinds of sub-
titles on almost all the stuff I read, new music and new electronic.
Sorry, I'll try to keep my personal editorializing to a minimum.

| Kurzweil Music Systems went public in December. They are trading on the NASDAQ
exchange. Quotes are listed in the Wall Street Journal under the NASDAQ BID
and ASKED QUOTATIONS section under the name Kurzweil Mus. They trade under the
initials KURM. I dont know anything about the financial position of the
company but I am trying to get info. If anyone else is interested in this kind
of information let me know and I will forward it when (and if) I get it.

| I've got the prospectus for Kurzweil Music Systems at home. It comes
complete with an audio cassette demonstrating the 250. The prospectus is
interesting if you're into things like that. It was interesting to read
about their product plans, their view of the competition, etc. Needless to
say, it is considered a high-risk stock. When I bought some shares earlier
this week, the broker handling the offering claimed that he would send me
some extra copies of the tape (maybe the written part, too; I don't
remember) to give to people who might be interested. If you're interested
send me mail.
If demand is greater than supply, I doubt I'll have time to make copies for
everyone. I will, however, make the prospectus and tape available to people
if they promise to return it within a day or two after they get it. I'll
try to remember to bring it to work on Monday so if you're in the Hudson, MA
area (HLO2-3 pole G12); feel free to stop by and take a look. If you're too
far away, send mail and we'll see if we can work something out.
- John Arnold -
P.S. One interesting piece of Digital-related news in the prospectus is
that Bill Thompson (former vice president of external resources or
planning/logistics or something) is now a primary officer in Kurzweil Music
Systems. I don't remember his exact title but it is in highest echelon.
