This conference has been established for the discussion of all
aspects of Classical Music... from composers and artists to
recording techniques and reference recordings, plus everything
in between - including live performances as well.
Creation of this conference grew out of a discussion in the
DSSDEV::AUDIO conference (see note 1669 and its replies). In
keeping with the spirit of that discussion, and the general
"hardware" focus of AUDIO, this conference should be focused
on the "software" aspects of classical music.

The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for all
types of folk music enthusiasts to share views and information on
performers, instruments, concerts, recordings, and related topics.
Please feel free to discuss the history, origins and politics of
folk music as well.
Participants are encouraged to give and request information about
teachers, places to purchase instruments, and other pertinent
resources. (I would like to encourage people to put a flag at the
beginning of notes which are only of limited geographic interest,
though, since I have heard that people *outside* the greater Boston
area often notice a slight geocentric bias towards this area!)
Traditional folk and folk revival topics are welcome here, as are
topics concerning various types of ethnic music.
When discussing the idea for this conference with other people,
the main concern I heard was, "It will will just degenerate into
a lot of arguments about what is and isn't folk music". I don't
want that to happen--lively discussion is welcomed, but I hope that
people will start new topics which reflect *their* views and interests
rather than spawn endless arguments which are unresolvable!
Welcome to the folk music conference.

Welcome to the wonderful world of guitars and guitar playing.
I've started this conference on my VAXstation to provide a forum
for guitarists to exchange information about their favorite musical
instrument(the guitar, silly.)
In keeping with the VAXnotes Conference Conduct, Chap 1, Sect 4.8,
Para. 2, here are the Guitar Conference Rules:
1) There are no rules.
However, folks wishing to 1) start popularity contests, 2) converse
at length about drums, keyboards, radio stations, pop rock etc.,
and 3) type tons of crap in just to see their handiwork, need not
apply. Do this in an appropriate Conference.
I've intended this Conference to deal with more technical aspects
of guitar playing(thus keeping the discussion of music in the MUSIC
conference.) Let's keep things on the order of: Scales, Progressions,
Chord Variations and Voicings, Effects, Recordings, Instructors,
Publications, Instruments, Tunings.....
Your Humble(?) Moderator,

Welcome to the NEW Heavy Metal Conference. Unfortunately,
the contents of the old conference were destroyed before they
could be copied to HSSWS1, but at least it died in infancy,
so there's not much to replace.
Heavy Metal is about Rock music. If you don't like hard
driving guitar licks and pounding drum beats, then Heavy
Metal is not for you. We're serious about our music here,
and we won't tolerate the presence of wimps. Don't try to
convert us to gospel or easy listening... we haven't got
time for that noise here.
So, if you haven't been offended so far... if you like
the sound of REAL music, then welcome to Heavy Metal. The
moderators of this conference (Myself, ANT::SLABOUNTY, and
YODA::COOK) are here to insure that thing don't get TOO
far out of hand. So, smash your television before MTV rots
your brain, crank up the stereo, and enter the world of
Heavy Metal.

This notes file is intended for the exchange of information on, as the title
suggests, audio systems and components.
Topics related to the audio portions of video equipment belong in the VIDEO
notes file so they don't get missed by those only concentrating in that area.
Cross topics (e.g. connections between VCR's and pre-amps) should go into the
notes file that covers the primary component of discussion. If, as the note
and its replies progress, it becomes evident that the main topic of the
discussion has changed to the primary concern of the other notes file, a note
should be put into that other notes file to inform people who primarily use it
-- also put a reply to that affect in the primary file. This action is the
responsibility of those involved in the discussion.

This conference is for the discussion of Records made of vinyl.
There are those who think that the vinyl record will become
the next dinosaur, extinction is imminent. This argument is
supported by the fact that a CD file exists, but there is, until
now, no file for the discussion of vinyl disks.
Oh yeah, don't feel limited by the word vinyl. There are still
those who search for and collect 78s which were made of different
material and were/are very fragile.
The intent here is to discuss and review records. As an amateur
record collector, I have about 2500 disc's, I'm always looking
for records to add to my collection.
Feel free to discuss and review any of the following:
1. New records (jazz, classical, R/R, R/B, comedy, soundtrack, etc.)
2. Old records (rare/hard to find, classic recordings).
3. Sonic quality.
4. Availability.
5. Cost, worth, value, and other synonyms.
6. Specific discographies for an artist.
7. Anything else that has to do with records, LPs, albums.
Please try to keep specific discussions of music to the Music File,
and CDs to the CD file.
As always, please follow the appropriate rules of etiquette.

iniziativa. Ripetiamo che TUTTI possono partecipare, preferibilmente
in italiano e inglese.
Eventuali suggerimenti possono essere mandati ai moderatori.

| The previous posting about USENET access is dead.
It should be deleted (Brad...)
The current USENET newsgroup for Computer Music is rec.music.synth.
There are other rec.music.*
The group for Atari ST is comp.sys.atari.st (also .sources, .binaries)
There are also other comp.sys.* (like mac, ibm pc, etc -- i am not sure
of the exact names.)
Previously, within DEC (easynet) we didn't have our own news access but rather
relied on mailings from a central system that did have access. This past
Spring that system died due to lack of resources. A new system has since
been developed that gives us on the Easynet real honest to goodness news
access.
To find out more about it look in the following conferences:
(I haven't been in these for a month or so so if they've changed do not
come to me)
UPSAR::NEWS-BACKBONE for general info and CCT interface into news.
UFP::XRN for access to a Xwindows news reader.
Look in the News-backbone conference first.
Questions can be asked in the above conferences.

| In the current Issue of Music Technology (Joe Sample) there are
references to two external (non-VAXnotes) conferences that I have not
heard of before. Is there anyone out there with experience in either
one?
The first is PAN mentioned in the editorial. The letters stand for
Performing ARtists Network and apparently there is a lively discussion
going on re the future of MIDI - some suggest that a new version MIDI
2.0 replace the current standard. - There is no info on how to get into
this conference.
The second is "Worldmusic USA" - there is a full page ad on this. This]
apparently is part of GEenie (GE time sharing servies). There is a
moderate reg fee $30. non-Prime rates are $5/hr for 300/1200 baud.
It can be accessed via 1-800-638-8369
Then you enter HHH
at the U#= prompt type XJM11820,GENIE <ret>
(then some dialog to join)
then type MIDI at any prompt.
NOTE: I have not tried this myself
From the description of the service it sounds very much like COMPUSERVE
which I have used for a number of years and have just recently joined
their MIDI forum. If anyone is interested on COMPUSERVE I'll write a
Separate note.
Along the same lines is BIX, the forum supported by BYTE magazine. I
haven't tried this one either.
What's the verdict? are these waste's of time/money? Is there really
much usefull music/programs/info etc.?

Neil

| COMPUSERVE has been around for some time. I've been a member for about
10 years. It has everything that PRODIGY promises, but from my
perspective is more responsive and certainly more mature. It is clearly
less "Glitzy" - ie doesn't use VTX type screens. I bought PRODIGY too
but don't like it because I think the glitz gets in the way.
Anyway back to COMPUSERVE. You can join by going to RADIO SHACK or many
dealers of software and get a starter kit. These run for about $40, If
you want I can get forms in about 10 days and interoffice them to you.
They have all the stuff you'd expect, shopping, weather reports, API
news, stock reports (S&P, Valueline, etc.) encyclopedias, airline
schedules etc. I haven't checked lately but I think there are some

They also have a number of confernences something like our notes files
but not organized quite as well. For years, I followed the PDP-11
conference when I was a product manager for those products. I just
recently discovered their MIDI conference. Don't have enough experience
to say how worthwhile it is and whether it is worth the connect charges
(around $5 an hour or so charged to my credit card). I did however
downline load a program called musicbox, now freeware, which is pretty
nifty and I will probably write a note about it in the
arranging/composing note.
For more info on joining you can also call 1-800-848-8199. Note they
are also good DEC customers and use a ton of our hardware. You can
phone in from a local number (usually telenet or some such) from just
about anywhere in the world.
Feel free to use my name and ID (Neil RICH, 70415,1000) if they ask for
a reference- there is some kind of contest to get new members going on.

| On defense of this 'upstart'...
COMMUSIC seems more geared toward computerized music generating
equipment such as MIDI. Although some talk of recording goes on here,
it's not the mainstream.
HOME_STUDIO is intended to cover the recording side, such as setting up
and running a studio. This applies to other areas besides computer
generated music.
Hopefully, it will pull information together that currently collects in
various different conferences (COMMUSIC, GUITAR, MUSIC, etc.) making it
easier to find and available to more people. Please give it a try.

| Yo Tom-
I'm sure the "upstart" moniker was used with tongue firmly in cheek, fer
starters. Also, I find that COMMUSIC offers "one stop shopping" for noters
who are "into" any aspect of music and electronics- as you mentioned, guitar,
MIDI, recording, amps, computer-generated music,... My own guess at the "core"
interests of noters would put MIDI and synthesis at the top, with recording
close behind, then signal processing (as in effects), and signal amplification
last. For me the issue is one larger conference, where stuff is admittedly
more "spread out," or several conferences, which are more of a pain for me to
track and integrate.
A side aspect of the diversity of topics covered here is there's no need to
cross-post some neat discussions which "cross the boundaries," so to speak.
If you attract enough noters to keep the new conference going, I'd guess they'd
be folks who *do* want to record, but *don't* have any interest in MIDI- after
all, the other topics covered here all pertain to home studios too, don't they?
Good luck on the venture. Just wanted to explain a bit why this particular
electronic entity doesn't care to add to my list of notes hangouts...

Hmmm, that wasn't the impression *I* got. In fact, I was a little
disturbed to see a couple of noters that I considered pretty reasonable
and level-headed jumping up and bashing the new conference before it
even became clear just what sort of a beast if would actually become.

Well, the "one stop shopping" is a two-edged sword. Admittedly, having
more conferences to follow is a pain, but on the other hand when one needs
to look for a particular piece of information it's a lot harder when you
have to wade through a more generalized (and usually much larger)
conference.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of this conference is discussion of aspects
of music creation which are covered (if at all) haphazardly
in other conferences, particularly writing, arranging, and
music theory. It is expressly *not* for the discussion
of musical instruments and other music-related equipment
(such as sequencers, amps, PA systems, recorders, etc.)
except in terms of how you use them as tools to write or
arrange music. Possible areas of discussion:
o Composition and songwriting (here's how I go about writing
a song, this is how Paul Simon writes, analysis of well-known
songwriters, how to write for video?...)
o Arranging (how to arrange for horn or string sections?)
o Music theory (what's the name of this chord? What are
the modes?)
o Legal issues (such as copyrights)
Equipment ads are not allowed and will be deleted and returned
to the author.

All I see is that some people in this conference are upset
that these new conferences are "infringing" on territory
that was once the sole domain of COMMUSIC.
The basic fact (and those who are frequenting the
new conferences I think will agree) is that COMMUSIC
is too broad to serve the interests of Songwriters and
Home recording enthusiasts. There is simply too much
material here to be able to find anything easily.
I've found COMMUSIC useful, but I'm also finding
the new conferences useful as well.

That's basically it.
Perhaps the basis of our objection is best stated by an old proverb:
"The sum of the parts is rarely equal to the whole"

The two more recent conference additions (Home Recording and Music
Making) should be welcome additions! How does "I write songs this
way.." relate to "Roland is Brain-dead", "SYSEX", and "That's one
mother of a shakuhachi"?
What was funny about the E-FLAT conference was the notion that you
could (I suppose) get to the point where there's a conference for each
of the myriads of individual components that make up writing music (and the
Foghorn Legghorn pointer was pretty clever ;-).
The way I figgure it, it'll all balance out soon. If folks feel
that this conference is sufficient - great! If the other conferences
provide some additional insight (especially from non-MIDImasters), then
that would be great too!
I don't see any harm in having them.

4.45 | What's the big deal? | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Now I'm down in it | Fri Jan 24 1992 15:37 | 34 |
| There are only two new music related conferences that I'm aware of,
this doesn't seem like such an overwhelming number.
While it's clear that the HOME_STUDIO conference has a lot of overlap
with this conference, I don't see how anyone could say that the
MUSIC_MAKING conference has any overlap, except possibly with a few
topics in Guitar. There's information in here about copyright
information and getting a record company started, but those are very
small facets of the songwriting process. There used to be some of that
sort of discussion in MUSIC, but the last time I read it (a couple of
months ago), it was totally listener oriented. Judging from the fact
that several of the people that have signed into the intro note there
were not regular participants of any of either this file, Music, or
Guitar I'd say that the new conference is filling a nitch that was
previously empty (for the most part, some pieces were spattered all
over the place).
I don't see any competition there at all.
As far as HOME_STUDIO goes, I don't see a problem letting it have it's
own place. Seems to me that if things segregate naturally, then that
should decrease some of that sort of note from this file and give both
conferences more of an organization and distinct purpose. Sure, there
may still be duplicated discussions, but I don't see that as a big
problem.
One stop shopping means having to walk past a lot of things you don't
need to find what you do. The more things there are in a store the
more difficult it can be to find any individual one if you don't shop
there often. Just because you have big department stores like K-Mart
which purport to give you everything you need doesn't mean that the
speciality shop is obsoleted (and vice-versa).

| My $.02
I think that at this time, yet another music conference that overlaps the turf
of this and other music related notesfiles is a waste of system cycles, net
bandwidth and disk space. Employee interest notesfiles are at risk. Dan Infante,
VP DIS, has instructed all of us in the DIS world to mark said notesfiles
nobackup, (yes Virgina he retracted it, but he also resent it after the
retraction). If the employee interest noting community doesn't recognize reality
here and do some downsizing or at least some containment of the overall
situation I think we're going to lose it all. This is not an offical benefit, and
just because Infante can't get his peers to back him on doing away with these
notesfiles today doesn't mean that he won't be able to at a later date. All it
would take is a couple more quarters like Q2.
In this case we would be better served by expanding the horizons of the existing
files rather than opening a new one. I doubt that anyone here or in guitar
would have a problem discussing these topics in those places.

| Well, I'm already on record as preferring to do "one-stop shopping" in COMMUSIC,
as for *me* it's more efficient- I don't see a whole lot in this conference that
*doesn't* interest me!
On the other hand, I would not welcome the merging of this conference with
MUSIC, GUITAR, and other miscellaneous music- and audio-related conferences which
already exist. I guess the point is that "focus" is a matter of perspective.
I can see how other individuals could prefer to discuss *just* recording or
*just* songwriting, and I'd say they have the right to give it a go. If the
new notesfiles end up having info which is not replicated here and seems too
valuable to pass up, they will have, IMHO, completed their "rite of passage"
and earned a following. If not...well, you know.
Time will tell.

I, for one, find little music written specifically for it -
Yeah, with a sequencer, you could transpose everything to it,
but only if you have the expensive gear to do it. it excludes
instruments such as the dulcimer which have no sharps or flats,
as well as the wailing of Walruses (one of the most creative
new styles of music to hit this decade) which are not tunable to
any particular key.

There is also a benefit to more smaller conferences!
It takes less time to do a complete sweep of them
and so you spend less time in notes if you are not
interested in the other topics that are discussed
in other conferences that otherwise would all be one.
|
4.52 | Is this an issue for "Notes on NOTES?" | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Mon Jan 27 1992 08:34 | 20 |
| I don't recall the exact conference, but I'm certain that there's a notesfile
on NOTES itself, which is where I think this discussion is actually headed.
Seems to me that one of two functionalities in notes (or both) would make this
a non-issue: either the ability to open and interact with an entire *group* of
conferences simulaneously (favoring the multiple, tightly-focused notesfile
model), or the ability to perform *all* operations (e.g., next unseen) with a
"current set" of keyword and/or other qualifiers (allowing greater efficiency
in a broad-focus conference).
These are really database issues, revolving around the way NOTES provides access
to the database which is a notesfile. I realize that speed of access (as it
relates to conference size) is still relevant; I have no idea what underlying
DB architecture is used by notes, but I'd guess is relatively primitive, with
no real attempt at optimization for large databases.
IMHO, of course, of course...

Jeez. There are about 15 conferences for personal computing
ranging from IBMPC to shareware to PATHworks (just how
many PATHworks conferences are there anyway?). So what is the
problem with having a couple of specialized conferences
dealing with recording techniques and music theory, neither
of which were (imo) really covered in the charters of
existing conferences? We don't discuss mic techniques in
COMMUSIC very often. We don't discuss music theory in
COMMUSIC. If you're not interested in either of those
topics, then just read COMMUSIC. Taking potshots at
related conferences because they "overlap" doesn't seem
to make the point of the pot-shotters any clearer to me.
What *is* the problem, anyway???

| re: the GUITAR conference
Since a lot of people are asking about it, I'll put a quick update in
here.
The host system (KDX200) was damaged as a result of a power outage in
CXO which also took out something like 30 other systems too. Needless
to say Field Service is swamped and has run out of spare parts for
certain things, so progress is going slow.
Also, it will have to be restored from offsite backups, since both the
disk it resides on and the staging disk for the backups were damaged,
so we may lose a few days worth of notes.
