1004.0. "Monthly costs for family of 5???" by GVA05::ATKINSON (Just the facts kid) Tue Aug 13 1996 04:41

    Hello,

My family and I will be relocating to Kanata within the next 3
months. I have a job already. The children are 5, 3 and 6 mths old. My
wife will not work as she go to University.

We are Canadians but have not lived there for 10 years now and we do
not know what to expect exactly in regards to the cost of living. I am
trying to figure out what we can afford in regards to mortgage payments
(and then the actual total cost of a house).

This is where this ellite forum comes into play. Would you all be so
kind as to help me put together an average monthly budget. I realise
that this is all very personal and different for each family, etc., what
I am looking for is what you feel is the approximate total monthly costs
for a family of five to live on.

thank you VERY much in advance for your assitance,
    Alan Atkinson

    Alan
I've just moved to Ottawa recently , from what I can see it's a
good time to look for a house in the Ottawa area. There are lots of
for sale signs out there, The prices vary but the range for a
3 bedroom house of about 1200 square feet is in the range of
$150,000-170,000, and intrest rates are currently the lowest
in years. 6.75% for 1 year, between 7 and 8% for 5 years.

The cost of a house may vary, prices are better further away from
the city center and on the the Quebec side of the River.

    Welcome Back

3,500 a month for a family of 5. That's living pretty good too, if you
    ask me.

    re .2

when you say 3,500 per month does that include mortgage payments? Or
does this cover everything (food, insurance, entertainment, car
payments, gas, utlities, clothes, etc,) except the mortgage?

I'm talking all inclusive based on $1000.00 rent/mortage. Perhaps
that's a conservative estimate for some, but not for me.
