993.0. "Disasterous trips to Canada" by MINOTR::BANCROFT () Mon May 20 1996 09:39

Cruise - Portland Maine to Yarmouth Nova Scotia overnight.
Overnight in Yarmouth, then Morn cruise back to Portland.
Got dinner at floating place in Portland basin (former ferryboat).
Left Portland Maine in the rain 2100 hrs Friday Night, 10 May.
Moderate sea, no visible seasick passengers. Visibility was about
50 yards. Reasonably comfortable cabin and beds. Breakfast on
ship, but sea was building, so ate lightly.
Arrived Yarmouth 0800 took shuttle to Rodd Grand Hotel and checked
in. Two hour bus tour of area left at 1000. Interesting view of
close-in items and fog. Dinner theater at hotel was "Acadian Night"
with one semi-pro female singer and 2 sets of kiddy dancers (ages
6-8 and 13-16) decidedly non-pro. "Prime Rib" dinner was brown
beef potroast. Breakfast at hotel was excellent.
Reboarded Scotia Prince 0900. Had day-cabin, and as the rain and
fog was still with us, slept much of return trip. At 1600 hrs there
was a buffet "dinner" which I ate, as I had taken dramamine. Sea
was rough and 1/5 of passengers were green and upchucking.
Portland finally arrived beside the ship at 2000 hrs. Customs was
quite fast. Back at Boston area 2230 hrs.

    Only on the fog horn.
Think it would be reasonable fun in good weather.
It was away from Digital work and away from work on the house and lawn.
It could have been worse. It was cheap. It was relaxing.

I am relieved. Almost all of the things that went wrong on these two trips
could have happened anywhere. My high opinion of Canadian hospitality remains
intact.
I am, however, concerned about the seasickness on the Scotia Prince cruise.
I have had a pipe dream for several years of taking this cruise. The problem,
of course, is that you have to book well in advance and can't predict how
rough the seas will be. The few times I have been on a boat, I was not seasick,
but I don't think I would hold out if there were seasick people around me.
