975.0. "Inquiring minds Are On The Prowl..." by BSS::PROCTOR_R (Unabashedly human) Fri Dec 01 1995 18:03

    I'm dying to know:

is Kanata a real place, or is it just some giddy person who can't spell
    Canada?

Kanata, was a town created for the unfortunate few Canadians which could
not use the Canadian term, eh!.

Actually, the name Kanata is the native name from which the name Canada
    was derived.

Seriously, it actually means something like "the land". In modern terms
it is now taken to mean "look upon the horror wrought by the urban
planner" in much the same way as Niagara now means "don't eat the three
    eyed fish"

Be thankful you don't live in Colorado, where the indian term for
'urban planner' means "make much money, destroy land, flee from scene"

Not to mention all the recent 'arrivals' who moved to my small (or used
to be small) town, and whine about "there's no malls; there's no movie
theatres like there was in Los Angeles"..

Well we're really wandering off topic here but what I was attempting to
comment on was the fact that Kanata is one of those great oxymorons, a
"planned community", in some way's it works and, in large part it has
now grown out of that forced, soulless confinement it started with and
now feels a little bit more like a community. Urban planning has come a
long way in the 20 odd years since Kanata was designed.

s'okay; I started the topic, so if we wanna wander off the topic, why
the heck not! Wandering IS permitted for this note...

It seems that you are complimenting your local planners, I wanna whine
    about ours..

Kanata's city planning could have gone a LONG way towards the creation
of community if they'd stuck with some of the original intentions of
Teron & co ... But as it was two years ago, Kanata Town Centre was
anything but ... The swimming pool was insufficient for the community
needs (wave pools are neat but ...) The plans for the city wave in the
wind. That is not town planning.

975.11Assuming Digital didn't go the neon-building route!BSS::PROCTOR_RUnabashedly humanWed Dec 06 1995 15:222
Can I assume that Digital's presence didn't cause an lasting/overtly
harmful effects on the town's physical appearance?
975.12Kanata...lousy nameFSCORE::B_LEURYWed Dec 06 1995 16:3427
Actually, the presence of Digital in Kanata has had a major (and I
believe positive) impact on shaping Kanata. City fathers have not
    recognized that.

Kanata officially became a city in 1978. It was formed from lands
belonging to three different municipalities. These lands were known
as Kanata (in the North and a subdivision of March Township), Hazeldean in
the South West (a subdivision of Goulburn Township) and Bridlewood in
the South East (a subdivision of the city of Nepean). Residents of the
lands in question voted on the new city's name. The three names proposed
    were Kanata, Hazeldean and Hazelwood.

The voting population was about 3500 in Kanata and 3500 total for
Hazeldean and Bridlewood. There was a big debate around the names. It
was felt that the choice of Hazelwood and Hazeldean would split the
vote from the south side and thus the name Kanata would easily win so
at the last minute, the name Marchwood was added to the proposed list.

The vote ended up being split in half with Kanata winning over
Hazeldean by a few dozen votes. The other two names were practically
ignored. You guessed it, those in the North voted for Kanata and
those in the South voted for Hazeldean (a name with over 100 years of
    tradition).

After 17 years, I still hate the name Kanata

    Bernie (from Hazeldean).

Well, surprise them with the correct pronunciation ...

	Kan ... like tin can
at ... like at the store
	a ... like the a in at

minor stress on the middle syllable ... but only very minor ... and flowing
like Canada ... In "Canada" there is minor strss on the first syllable ...
so it IS different from "Kanata"
