What's the sccop? Is the whole place closing, or just the Cabana Room?
Whadda drag; I always liked seeing bands in that room (although it been
a few months since I was last there).

| Heard on the radio this AM, the whole place is gone into recievership.
I was last there on October 28th and spent what will probably be by
last of many nights holding up the pillar in front of the bar. The
Cabana room was unique in it's game, it was certianly the longest
running of Toronto's live music clubs (those that claim to be older
like The Horsehsoe have had long closures and significant changes of
management) and the most accessable for new bands.

Receivership? Oh, well then, don't give up hope yet. I've been in
Toronto for ten years now, and during that time the closing of the
El Mocambo has been an almost annual event.
You're right about the "new bands" thing, though. Several of my
friends' bands played there many times before they could get gigs
elsewhere.

They said on CITY-TV last night that the current owners are trying
to regroup, get some cash together, and renovate or redevelop the
site.
They said it might take as long as a month before they know what's
happening, and couldn't really say whether or not the place would
re-open basically as is, or be replaced.

| let it pass. lets not dominate popular history like sooo many boomer
establishments try to do. change is good. let the children feel good
about their own times and things. out with the old in with new and
again and again.

As far as I know, it's still standing, and there is a gay bar
called `Boots' operating on the main floor. I'm not 100% sure
on that, though.
