965.0. "Need your advice" by TAOV01::BRIANPAN () Fri Oct 20 1995 05:32

    Hi:
I need some advice for what hapened to me while I was in Canada
about two months ago. Here is what happened:

I reneted a car from Avis. While I was making a turn in the hotel's
parking lot, accidentally I scratched the bumper. Unfortunately,
some paint on the bumper was therefore off. Its size is about 6-inch
by 3-inch. The bumper was not dented at all. Also, there were already
several coin-size scracthes on the bumper before I rented the car.
A couple of days ago I received my AE monthly statement. It says that I
need to pay Avis CAD 470 ( 375 for the car damage and 95 for miscelaneous
expenses). I am wondering if that penalty is reasoble. Shall I pay it?
Is there any Better Business Bureau or Consumer Protection Foundation
in Canada? If yes, how can I communicate with them from Taiwan? Can
they call me? I want to make sure the amount that I pay Avis is justified.

Any advice will be highly appreciated !!

    Brian

    Brian,

What city/province did this take place in?

I've had a bit of work done our leased 1995 Windstar during the last
year - $8665.00 worth in fact...

If they replaced the entire bumper, the charges seem about right. I
don't mean that they're fair, just that they seem to be inline with
what new bumpers cost and what it costs in labour to have the bumper
    replaced.

    Regards,

RE: 1 I used Digital special deal when I rent AVIS car and I
    didn't pay additional insurance fee.
RE: 2	The place is Ottawa.

AVIS didn't fax me the details specifying why the amount is CAD
    375. The other fee indludes 2 working days resulting in business loss,
gas fee... Well, I need to wait to see the invioce details and then
    decide whether I should pay.

965.5Hope you used your AMEX !!CGOOA::BCLARKEMon Oct 23 1995 11:0724
If you used Digital's plan and rented from AVIS, then I am assuming you
used your AMEX to pay for it ??

If not, you need to use a credit card that provides the insurance for
you. (ie. Visa Gold ...) If you didn't, then you will be responsible
    for the charges.

I think you said that you used your AMEX though, and all you need to do
is call AMEX customer service and ask for the Accident claims desk.
They will ask for the receipt of the rental showing that you used your
AMEX and the location and phone number of the place that you rented
    from.

When I did this, AMEX was very good about this. They will immediately
issue a temporary credit for the damages until they investigate. If the
charges are legitimate, they will pay for the entire damages. If there
are any other problems, they will also straighten them out.

I was very impressed with AMEX for this, as they took everything off my
hands and handled the entire situation.

    Regards
    Brian
