| Beware that the GST amount paid in total MUST have been sufficient to
hurt your pocketbook for Revenue Canada to entertain a refund ... and
I'm not altogether certain you can get a refund on things bought and
used while in Canada ... just those items exported.

| I seem to have met the criteria specified in the booklet that comes with the
application. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

943.6 | Cashing a GST cheque ? | FRUST::PAUL | Oliver Paul, IST/IAS, Frankfurt/Germany (FRS) DTN 861-3881 | Tue Aug 22 1995 17:02 | 13 |
| Just received my two GST cheques from the government of Canada from a trip
last year and one this spring. Since it is very expensive to cash a foreign
cheque over here in Germany (~$ 30 per cheque), I would like to know
whether it is possible to cash the cheque in a canadian bank (without
having a bank account there) and getting the money directly (in C$). Does
anybody know this or could anybody ask for me ?
Thanx in advance.
Choo!

| Hi Oliver,
Yes, it is possible. I was faced with the same thing here in the UK last
year.
A quick call to the issuing Canadian Goverment department revealed
that:
No Canadian bank is allowed to charge for cashing a GST cheque. The
just need 2 proofs of identity. The only problem is that the cheque is
only valid for 6 months.
I received my cheque just before Christmas and cashed it in June in
Hope BC.

| Hi Geoff,
you again ... ;-) .
That's good news. We'll be in Vancouver in October.
What do you mean with 2 proofs of identity ?

| Hi Oli,
The bank I went into insisted on a Passport and a credit card.
I was a bit surprised at the need for both, but I suppose they can't be
to careful.
Cheers,
Geoff
