919.1 | Calgary's A Super Spot! | KAOFS::LOCKYER | | Wed May 10 1995 11:45 | 12 |
| It's an easy trip to the Rockies from Calgary - depending where you go
(Banff, Lake Louise, etc), it's about 1 to 2 hours on very good roads.
Edmonton is a couple of hours north of Calgary and the US (Montana) a
couple of hours south. Regina is many hours (14 to 16? can't remember,
but it always seemed to take forever!) east and Winnipeg is another 8
to 12 (again, a bit of a guess).
So yes, Calgary is a good spot to IF you want to go to the Rockies. If
I had to travel from Calgary to Winniper (vice versa), I wouldn't
drive...

Garry,
I guess your memory is even worse than mine. From what I remember
from Calgary to Medicine Hat is 3 hrs, then another 1 1/2 to
Swift Current and about another 1 1/2 hours to Regina for a total
of about 6 hours. I'm pretty sure it never took more than 12 hours
for a Calgary to Winnipeg trip and that was with 1 - 1 1/2 hours of
stops.
My times are based on cruising between 100 and 110 kph.

| OK, OK, it just seemed like 12 hours - one of the most boring trips in
the world. I wouldn't reccomend doing it even once!

919.5 | Try the train! | POLAR::WILSONC | | Sat May 13 1995 03:38 | 7 |
| If you have the time why not take the train? Plane fares from Winnipeg
to Calgary are inflated. If you've never seen praries before why not
take your time and take the train. VIA rail is not too bad, you would
be boarding the transcontinental which is equipped with a lounge car
where you may smoke if you do and drink if you do. The trip is probably
about 12 hrs, its just an idea. I personally like the train for the
social aspect and stuff.

| quite civilized there in Calgary. speed limits to banff are 110 km/hr.
Quite nice compared to Toronto et al (100 kph).
Lovely trip. Watch out for rocks on the road coming up and hitting
windshields from trcuks and such.

| Banff and area will be fantastic during August. Given the elevation,
you may wish to bring a warm sweater, as nighttime temps will often
drop below +10C. Over the past number of years, much of Banff has been
purchased by Japanese investors. There are numerour Asian tours, and
the are can become quite crowded.
The Hot Springs have been closed for a number of months, but, approx. 2
1/2 further west is a place -- Radium Hot Springs. If you like Golf,
some of the finest western canadian courses are in the Banff and
Kananaskis areas.
Your timing for Winnipeg may coinside with a festival known as
Folklorama. It is GREAT!!!

overlooking the lake.

| Thanks, for the Ont/Michigan travel tips. I grew up north of Superior,
in Terrace Bay, so I am kinda partial to the Canadian side.
I will be stopping in Terrace bay to visit my Mom.
Can anyone suggest or have experience with campgrounds from West of
Thunder Bay, to Calgary. good for tents and trailers, showers, etc.,
Is there any 800 lines for Tourist info, like maps, scenic guides,
attractions along the way?

| I'll be traveling to Lethbridge from Calgary in August. Approximately how long
will it take to drive?
Also, are there places to go horseback riding near Lethbridge? (I would imagine
there are near Calgary, but I have to be in Lethbridge for most of my stay.)
Thanks,
Val

919.16 | DRIVING TO LETHBRIDGE | CGOOA::TWOLF | | Tue Jul 25 1995 22:41 | 12 |
| re: 13
You should likely plan on a little over two hours to drive the 240 km
from Calgary to Lethbridge; this is the land of 110 km per hour speed
limits but there is road construction. There is also quite bit of road
work going on in Lethbridge as they had a huge flood in early June and
are still trying to clean up. It was very slow when we drove through
there two weeks ago.
Regards,
Tom.

| Oh, too bad about the flooding. And thanks for the warning. I was hoping to
see Banff and the parks out that way before heading to Lethbridge (I'll be
arriving at 1:00 pm), but I'm not sure I'll be able to convince my boyfriend if
we'd be looking at a 3-hour drive from Banff to Lethbridge.
