910.0. "Sail in TO without owning a boat" by TROOA::HARRIETHA (Sharon Harrietha @TRO Ont Canada) Sun Apr 09 1995 17:39
Sail without owning a boat --- At Westwood Sailing club -- 1995
Two summers ago, two other Digital employees and I, discovered a hidden treasure
along Toronto outer harbor waterfront -- Westwood sailing club!
Westwood Sailing Club is a non-profit sailing club that has been operating
for just under 30 years. It offers unlimited sailing, organized events,
lessons, barbeques, and plenty of socializing. It attracts people from all
ages and backgrounds. (I haven't had as much fun, meeting people, since
University residence).
The club is located just a few minutes from downtown Toronto, on a secluded
cove. You can sail around the picturesque Toronto islands, or catch a
spectacular view of Harbourfront, all from the cool water, on a hot summer's
day. Afterwards, you can barbeque your dinner, and enjoy socializing.
It's like being at the cottage, and yet you are just minutes from home.
You can learn to sail, as we did last year, from a combination of Westwood
Sailing lessons, and from more experienced members who will take you for a
sail, and let you 'take the helm'. Both Beginner and Intermediate lessons
are taught by accredited Canadian Yachting Association instructors.
There is organized "SOCIAL SAILING" on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings,
which means a "beach captain" will pair you up with other sailors, based on
matching beginners with more experienced people, as well as helping people
to meet others. An added bonus ... on Thursday nights, a gourmet barbeque
awaits you after you've sailed, for a mere $5.00. (We take turns preparing!)
You can also sign-up to participate in RACES, held every Friday night, and
several weekends during the summer (the "regattas").
The best news is the low cost:
$ 300.00 + GST - Annual membership, unlimited sailing, and free parking
$ 75.00 + GST - Beginner or Intermediate Sailing lessons
You can sail any time you can find a boat, and a fellow member, which is not
hard to do. There is published directory of members, an organized listing by
postal code, and a special list for folks that are available during regular
"office hours". Most times you can just go down to the club, find someone
else there and go for a sail. It is a very friendly club.
Finding a boat is not hard, because the available boats are:
Type Size and Capacity Total Persons
o 14 Albacores 5 meter, 2 to 3 person dingy 42
o 2 Lasers Smaller, one person sailboats 2
o 3 Hobie Cat 16's 2 to 4 person catamarans 12
o Motor Boat The "Crash Boat" (rarely needed!) 4
o Committee Boat Usually used to organize events 4

Since membership is limited to 150 people, there is almost always enough
boats to go around at any a particular moment. Even on a popular summer
night, there is the space of 60 + people to get out on the water. (There is
also a couple of private boats that the members have the use of).
