| ;- a few back - Counting the geigers ...tick ...tick....
You measure Radiation with a Geiger counter.
This is know as a Geiger-Muller counter and was invented in Germany in 1925.
It was invented by Hans Wilhelm Geiger ( 1882-1945 ).
We can trace Hans Wilhelm as being the son of the brother of my wifes Great
Great Grand Father.
(I'm not very good at this when you get past Cousin...)
My wifes Great Grandfather was born in Zurich Ontario
in 1868 and his father Fredrick came from from Germany (Not sure in what year
yet) and his wife Sweden.
The word Geiger in German means Fiddle player - So the Library book on Surnames
says ..I'm yet to look this up in a German Dictionary. Geiger is a German/Jewish
Surname ....
Its amazing what you can find out by spending an hour in the Library on a wet
Saturday morning.

Small world, I worked at the National Research Coucil of Canada in
Ottawa in the 80's, and met a Dr. Geiger who worked in the high energy
Physics section. He was a relative of H.W. Geiger of counter fame. He's
probably retired now though, although there is a Klaus Geiger
listed at 865 Chapman in Ottawa (613) 733 4769.
You never know...

Inquiring minds need to know.
I beta they did. I'd even gamma that they knew Rutherford too. But I
must be Bohr-ing you.

| Thanks everyone for your help....Especially Roch.
I will update this notes string on a later date , with regards to our quest.
We will be visiting Canada this summer and hope to spend some time in the
Brandon area. The thing about planning a trip in Canada is getting distances
into perspective....In the U.K. you can drive from top to bottom in
under 24 Hours non stop (880 miles).
Thanks Again everyone ..... + The Radiation crew....

| Ya, distances need to be appreciated, particularly if you had to make
such a journey during the winter!
Thanks for taking the silliness in the manner it was intended.
Enjoy yourself,
Pat

| A while ago I asked for help in tracing some long lost family in Canada.
A couple of replys gave me the details of names and addresses of possible
family in Brandon.
We wrote to the two addresses about a month ago, and today we got a reply.
Yes they are family and enclosed details and photos.
The family who replied are second cousins and will be in the U.K. in
May this year, a trip they have been planning for the last four years.
So we are going to write back and try to meet up when they spend a few days
in London.
These tours of England by coach , taking in the whole U.K. sound like
hard work , I'm not sure if any of you guys have tried this?
They say that the exchange rate is also poor , for Canada tourists at the
moment.
Anyway I would like to say that the power of NOTES is just ...well
incredible...and the Digital extended family spanning the world.
Its the power of communications tools like Notes
that make you proud to work for Digital.
Thanking all
Kevin Raven ( Newbury U.K.)
