859.0. "ADVERTISING" by KAOFS::B_VANVALKENB () Fri Sep 16 1994 12:59

Seen an advertisement (public information spot) on a Canadian
station last night that sort of ticked me off.

Guy is driving home in his car..and berating himself for
not using a condom...and is worried about possibly giving
    aids to his wife.

So the add was basically saying its ok to cheat on your
spouse but hey use a condom !!!!

I didn't catch the sponsor of the add but it must have been
either the goverment or the Aids research foundation.

Next time it's on I'll try to find out which and probably
    a letter will follow.

Interesting lack of consideration of all kinds of issues in there.

Never mind AIDS for himself ...

Never mind cheating on his wife ...

Never mind cheating on himself ...

For a Ad with a moral, it sure sounds like it is very laking in Morals!

No one has pointed out yet that he was "cheating" on his wife with
    another man. Very, very naughty.

It's when people think positive kind thoughts about toads. If there's any
lifeform on earth that needs some elevating from time to time, it certainly
must be the toad, wouldn't you think? ;-)

There are a number of offensive commercials on these days, both
    on radio and TV.

How about the speeder who kills his wife and injures his
daughter in a car wreck, she screams I want my mommy..

The Stupid Line, where do you draw yours?

The Drunk driver crying into his baby's crib.

All of these have forced me into discussions with my
5 year old that I really didn't want to get into. I can
never find the D**M remote to mute them in time.

All we can do is to hope they will run out of money and
these "ugly adverts" aimed at the 1%ers will go away. Unless
of course they are funded by your tax dollars, in which case
the pocket are still pretty deep in terms of political
    correctness.

I haven't seen one that would actually make me write a letter
    yet...

That commercial depicting a crash and eventual fatality in the
E.R of a mother is terribly misleading. The main message that
the government is trying to put out is that speed kills. In fact,
speed does not kill. Wasted at the wheel, no regard for other
motorists and poor judgement are the real causes. This commercial
is just on the airwaves now to justify the photo radar and the typical
roadside cop pulling you over for a speeding offense when you and him
are the only ones on the road! We are getting our wallets vacuumed
by the NDP and the OPP. Check out the way it is in Germany. They are
not so hung up on speed over there.

Come now people, it's time for you all to crawl out of your secure
protected lives and realize that speeding AND booze are the reasons
for the majority of all traffic accidents today.

It is all well and good to ignore the tragadies we see everday
until it hits close to home, and then it is too late.

If our children are taking note of these commercials, I say
good, at least maybe their generation will not grow up as
stupid as our generation in matters of public safety on our
	highways.

Maybe some of us are speeders and/or drink and drive. That would
mean that these advertisments are embarrassing...GOOD! It's like
the wife beating commercials, I hope the bastards who fall into
that group squirm in their seats everytime they see a commercial
	like that.

Television has been dumped on by many groups over the years as
being an awful vehicle that simply rots the minds of those
who watch it, I for one find it refreshing to see it being used
	for something constructive for once.

Far more effective than these contrived commercials, of course, is
the graphic images of two vehicles turned into a huge human
meatgrinder, smeared over the front pages as we have seen recently.

This kind of "advertising" serves to remind locals of the risk they
are taking with inappropriate conduct, and keeps it on the program
where you expect to see it, the news. They should play videos of
the accident scenes at the bar, just before closing time.

I kinda fell in love with that Coppertone girl...I worked in a pharmacy
while as a teen and the hormones raged and a display of her came in, in
a bikini...oh, ah...never was the floor around that display ever dirty,
I was always sweeping around it...
859.14There is no justice.POLAR::MCNALLYSun Nov 06 1994 09:267
I must reiterate that speeding is not the major cause of accidents
on our highways. As I stated earlier, that commercial depicting
a mother's demise is only on there to justify wasteful government
spending. The real problem is the boozing and the young offenders.
Why hasn't someone started a topic on the "joke " that we
    call the YOA.
