855.0. "Opportunities in W Canada?" by NEWOA::HARRISON (Take the money and run!) Mon Aug 22 1994 07:53

      Hi,

Could anybody give me a feel for available opportunities in
I.T., Cable/Telecomm companies in Western Canada. I'm particularly
interested in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Ideally I'm looking for
a job transfer within DEC or a one year contract with another firm
with a view to emigrate should things work out, or a full time job of
course. My Sister and Brother-in-law have offered to sponsor me should I
    decide to go for it.

I live in the UK so its difficult to know where to look for jobs in the
above categories, I'm a regular Internet surfer and have discovered the DEC
Calgary Web Server but I can't see any links to local City Services. I've
got an up to date "Resume" and C.V. ready to send.

Are there specific Job Agencies or publications that people recomend.

Am I barking at a tree thinking I can do this? I know the economic
situation is not great in Alberta like everywhere else at the moment.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

            Thank you. Alastair

Hi Alistair,

I don't know if our Western colleagues have more info, but I can tell you
of someone who was laid off from DEC UK and used his package to emigrate
with his chemical engineer wife to Calgary about a year ago.

After 9 months of not being able to get work for EITHER of them, they
went out east to southern Ontario. Within a week his wife had a good
job and a week later he had some contract work ...

Basically out West there are lots of people who follow the boom and bust
of the oil fields, so while there are a reasonable number of jobs, because
of the decline in the oil industry, there are too many applicants for every
job. He told me of a system manager's job ... nothing special ... there
were 113 applicants!

Edmonton was in the same situation ... they looked all over the west.

Vancouver might be better off ...

But to put it simply, this is not a time that I'd consider emigrating.
(I came to Canada in 1981 ... and have been in Colorado Springs for a
year ...)

Judging by the only reply I've received I guess opportunities are thin
on the ground over there. Could anyone advise me which are the best
newspapers or publications for jobs in IT or Telecomms? Anyone know the
address of Alberta Government Telephones or the BC equivalent?

    Thanks Al
