822.0. "CALGARY STAMPEDE" by USCTR1::CMORIN () Thu May 05 1994 13:22

    CALGARY
    =======

    My husband and I have been invited to attend the Calgary Stampede
    in July.

    Never being in Calgary before, or attending a "stampede", I am
    interested in just what to expect of this adventure.

    Does anyone out there know:

    	- what kind of stampede is this?
    	- how long does it usually last? (couple of hours?, days?, etc)
    	- are there any other activities going on during the stampede?
    	- what "touristy" things should we see while we are there
    		. planning to spend 4 days

    Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Cheryl Morin

822.1It's a BIG cowboy party!!!KAOFS::LOCKYERNO! (Tact Is For Weenies!!)Thu May 05 1994 13:3525
    it's a very large exhibition centred on a rodeo. It's billed (I think)
    as the The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth. It lasts 10 days. Most of
    the action is at the Stampede Grounds on MacLeod Trail, just south of
    the builtup part of the city. Calgary has a pretty good light rail
    transit system that makes it very easy to get to the Stampede from most
    parts of - certainly very easy if your staying downtown.

    I highly reccomend going to the Stampede one night to see the Chuck
    Wagon Races and the Grandstand show. If you're into rodeo, it takes
    plac in the afternoon.

    Banff National Park is only about 60 miles away from Calgary, so you
    might want to go there.

    During the Stamped, most businesses relax their dress standards -
    western clothing is the norm. Many businesses and shopping centres
    have "Stampede Breakfasts" each morning - pancales, beans, bacon and
    coffee for a few bucks.

    I'm sure some Calgarians will jump in with more information and
    opinions.

Glenn,

Not sure but I assume you'd have to use the "Grand Canal!"

822.5Book your Hotel Now !!!CGOOA::BCLARKEThu May 05 1994 17:2227
    Hi,

    Brian Clarke from the DEC Calgary Office. The Calgary Stampede is
    definately "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth !!". It usually attracts
    close to 500,000 tourists each year, with a gate attendance of almost 2
    million people (ie. 2 Million People walk through the Stampede gates
    every year.)

    Dress is very relaxed with jeans, and cowboy shirt being the norm. If
    you do not have any of that type of clothing, and would like to fit in,
    I would recommend that you buy it before you come. That is not to say,
    that there is nowhere in Calgary to get that, but you will probably pay
    too much for it.

    Highly recommend the Chuckwagon Races, Grandstand Show, Stampede
    Breakfast, Calgary Convention Centre for some 2-steppin', and Banff if
    you get the time.

    If you have not already booked your Hotel, you might want to consider
    doing that ASAP. Hotel's sell out very quickly, and during Stampede
    week, it's impossible to find one.

    Have a great time
    Brian

    Ben, the Grand Canal circumscribes the entire province of Alberta as
    the Albertans didn't want to have anything to do with the Grand Canal,
    or the Hudson Bay watershed diversion project.

When I was out they had a casino at the grounds.

Got a have a corn dog.

Take in the fireworks from atop the hill.

While in Banff take the Tram up Sulfer MTN.

A bit of a drive but the dinosaur exhibits are in Drumheller.

Good zoo.

Usually some noon time events downtown.

Take in some local bars. I didn't like the convention centre party.

Too bad you only have four days.

Cheers
