820.0. "Tulip Festival '94" by OTOOA::ESKICIOGLU (where's hareket there's bereket) Mon Apr 25 1994 11:37

    Hi Everybody,

My name is Lale which means Tulip in Turkish.

History of the flower tulip goes back 2000 years. 400 years ago first
tulip bulbs were sent to Holland from Trkiye and Holland gave this
beautiful flower the attention it deserved.

Ottawa's Tulip Festival is world's oldest tulip festival. Istanbul
Tulip Festival is world's biggest tulip festival. This year, in
celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Turkish Tulips' arrival
to Holland, Canadian Tulip Festival is a tribute to Trkiye.

Past October, Dutch, Canadian and Turkish children in Ottawa, planted
gift bulbs of an ancient variety known as Turkestanica, sent by the
city of Istanbul. Come May, these will bloom and let the festival
    start.

Tulip Festival attracts 600,000 visitors every year and this year
it will just boom. Concerts, shows, plays, exhibitions, food and the
    usual beauty.

Trkiye is represented in Major Hill Park with Turkish Village and
there will be all the ambiance that could be brought from Trkiye. Folk
dancers, plays, art, handcraft, food, coffee, dessert, souvenirs,
music, bridal tent, traditions, hospitality and much more.

I have always been a part of the folk dance troup but this year I
injured my back so I won't be dancing. I will be the coffee grind-
fortune teller. When you come to the festival, make sure to come by
and say hi. And if you want to know your future (or past, for that
matter) all you need to do is to drink a cup of thick, heavy Turkish
coffee. I'll take it on from there ;-)

I know everything you want to know about the festival, so just ask. If
I can't answer your question myself, I will get the answer for you
    within a day or two.

This year there will be many bus tours for the festival from United
States, so if you are reading this note from south of the border, then
check out your local travel agency. Or just get into the car and drive.
Bring the kids. Kids love Tulip Festival.

Support the Canadian Tulip Festival, it can't happen without the
visitor (you) and without the volunteer (me). Ottawa is a town of
festivals. There is one going on almost every week. Let's keep them
    going.

Hope to see you all there

    Lale

    leaves.

    No, I don't do palms.
