Montreal's need was greatest. reads the headline. This is the "reasoning" behind locating yet another Federal (you know the government in Ottawa) office there. It appears that "poor" old Montreal has hit hard times, and needs the boost. It is not (according to the PM) a bid to win support for the federalist side in the upcomming "battle of Quebec". Do you suppose that Montreal is suffering from years of political unstability, and racial intolerance ? Nah, it's all the ROC's fault I'm sure. In an unrelated event, the Montreal casino will be getting a $90,000,000 expansion. I wish Nepean was so "poor" Derek.

Montreal has the highest unemployment compared to the other large cities in Canada. Of course the language issue has affected Montreal, I don't think anyone denies that. Toronto is in much better shape and Vancouver is still roaring ahead of the rest. Glenn

It'll probably help the city when Quebec separates. After all, PQ/BQ swear up and down they want to be members of the NAFTA zone when Quebec has its' day. I can just see Jacques Parizeau already proclaiming, "we even now have our own NAFTA trade office" in Quebec. I agree, if Montreal is so poor, how come all these people have all this money to spend in multimillion $ casinoes. These aren't lowly bingo halls, but the real thing. Las Vegas of Canada????? So this is Canada eh! Pay taxes to the canadian governement and don't get anything in return. With Qubec separate, we would not be counting beans as to who got what, what was a political "investment"... Jean

Oh, but Jean, remember yours is a 'have-not' province. That would support the theory that political blackmail does bring oil to the squeaky wheel. |
