RIN is basically the owner's ID which is usually his driver's license number.
I hope that you have the import documentation from both the EPA and the
DOT since this was a US import, becasue to register it, you need both.
The registration document serves as both Title (the concept of which we
don't have in Ontario) and registration.
You may have problems registering it yourself, because the person you bought
it from has not taken title ... this will freak out your typical DMV.

The EPA restrictions likely do not apply due to the age of the
car (1926). An undocumented vehicle can be dealt with via
"affidavit" which is a process performed for a fee at your
local courthouse, (in Canada at least) and involves filing a
couple of statements. It used to cost $10 or thereabouts, probably
more now.

| Having gone through the export of a car to the US, I believe
the rules were, that even if the vehicle did not have to conform
to EPA rules, it must have a waiver.
This vehicle seems to be documented ... viz it has an Ontario Reg.
but the person who imported it into the US does not appear to have
taken title. It makes me wonder if it was correctly imported. If
it wasn't, it will have to go back to Canada, and be correctly
imported. I doubt that taking it to your local US customs port
will be sufficient (ie the Atlanta Airport).

769.5 | already in the US | OASS::STDBKR::Burden_d | Synchromesh gearboxes are for wimps | Tue Dec 07 1993 12:44 | 16 |
| Thanks for the replies, but before we get too deep into this rat hole,
maybe I should have stated that the car is already in the US and the person
I bought it from is in the US too. The history is that (using first names
only) I bought it from Walter in NY. He bought it from Lou in Toronto and
he bought it from Ron in Woodstock, ON. The registration I have is from
Ron.
As far as I can tell it has never been titled or registered in the US, but
I don't need a title for the car anyway and the Bill Of Sale will be
sufficient to register it.
I think I'll drop Ron a line and see how long he owned it. There are
indications that he was the original owner, which means I had better act
fast!! :-)

| Bud Dave, rat-holes are fun ... they allow so much speculation!
Lou in Toronto should have registered the car, unfit, in his own name.
So your registration document should have shown Lou as the registrant.
What Walter did ... hmmmm ?
Presumably, the car wasn't running, so he must have trailered it into
the USA. If he did that, then the chances of not formally importing
it are slim ...but, if it were me, I'd be asking Walter if he has
a copy of the customs forms. I can't imagine customs letting a car
in without paperwork. When we moved finally in October, customs did
not give two hoots about the household stuff ... they just wanted to
make sure I had the paperwork for the car sitting on a U-Haul trailer!
When I DROVE across the border, nobody paid any attention to the car!!!

769.7 | the real serial number | OASS::BURDEN_D | and a dozen grey attorneys | Tue Jan 18 1994 22:11 | 15 |
| I just got a reply from Ron in Woodstock and he sent me the serial number
plate from the car! It's a different number than on the registration but
makes more sense. The number on the registration dated the chassis from
1918, but it has a 1926 engine and body. The number on the plate dates
the chassis from 1926 which is correct.
Anyway, Ron says he didn't sell it to Lou, but to someone named Paul...
He did give me the name and address of the person he bought it from, a
Bob in Goodrich(?), Ontario (N7A 3Y6 if someone can confirm the name of
the town). Time for another letter.
Also, in case anyone is interested, the serial number is a US production
number, not one made in the Walkerville, Ontario Studebaker plant.

769.9 | W.A. BYRNES?? | OASS::BURDEN_D | and a dozen grey attorneys | Thu Jan 20 1994 19:57 | 13 |
| One more item in case someone can help me. In the car was a metal name
plate that went on the passenger's door. I bought a book about hearses
and ambulances and it was common for the Funeral Home or ambulance
company to put their name on the cars in such a manner. The plate reads:
W. A. BYRNES
So far I have been able to track the car to southern Ontario (Woodstock
and Goderich) so if anyone knows of a W.A. Byrnes funeral home in that
area I'd love to get the address of them.
Thanks

| Well there is no funeral home listed in either Goderich or
Woodstock with the name Byrnes.
In addition there are no telephone listings for any person named Byrnes
in Goderich but there is a D.A. Byrnes in Woodstock.

ont.general and one guy is mailing me some names and address from London.
I will also drop another line to the previous owner in Woodstock and see if
he knows anything more.
