763.0. "Buying medicines in Canada" by MSBCS::NARAHARI () Wed Nov 24 1993 14:40

Hello,

A friend of mine who lives in India needs to buy medicines to treat his medical
condition. This particular medicine is a new drug that is not yet available in
India.

The drug is in clinical trial in the US, and I have been told that the Food and
Drug Administration, a branch of the United States government that oversees
introduction of new drugs might approve the drug in March - April 1994.

However the drug is available in parts of Europe, and in Canada. My question is
this- Can I buy the drug in Canada using a prescription provided by a medical
doctor in the US? I would like to then send this to India, since the patient
needs it urgently, and cannot wait until it is available in India or the US.

If the prescription provided by a doctor practising in the US is not valid in
Canada, is there another procedure whereby I can buy the drug. Can the patient's
doctor provide a description of the ailment, a diagnosis, and a need for the
drug, and then obtain the drug?

Thanks
Sanjay

No, a prescription from a US doctor cannot be honoured in Canada. In fact
most pharmacies will not honour a prescription from an out of town doctor
without verifying the Doctor and prescription.

No, you probably will not be able to get a Canadian doctor to provide a
prescription for a patient he has never seen. This is not an ethical
nor a safe practice.

Sorry for the bad news ...

Also note that it may not be legal to import the drug into India ... you
face numerous legal problems if caught, and the patient's Doctor could be
in serious hot-water for prescribing an unapproved drug.

Stewart,

Now I'm convinced.

You know EVERYTHING.
