737.0. "Newfoundland/PEI info?" by TROOA::MCNEILL () Thu Aug 26 1993 12:02

I'll be motorcycling from Toronto out to the east coast in early September,
and I'm looking for any info on places/sights/restaurants/pubs/beaches??? that
are on the "do not miss" list. I'm not looking for the "touristy" spots, but
rather the places that are unique to the local culture. (ie. Why Newfies are
the way they are!)

I want to spend most of my time seeing Newfoundland and PEI. I expect I'll
blast straight out as fast as I can (within the limitations of anticipated
saddle-sores!) before looking for any cultural enrichment.

Can I get to Nfld via PEI (or NB/NS?), or do I have to go all the way around
to the north shore.

Any tricks to the ferries?

Any good camping spots?

Any places going to be a waste of time?

Thanks,
Mike

737.1Gros Morne National ParkKAOFS::S_BURRIDGEStephen, dtn 640-7186, CTH-2/2Thu Aug 26 1993 14:555
    I visited Newfoundalnd as a tourist in 1984, and camped for several
    days at Gros Morne National Park, on the west coast of the island. The
    natural beauty is spectacular. I would definitely recommend a visit.

737.2Great place, going back next summerKAOFS::D_STREETVirtue is relativeThu Aug 26 1993 16:1011
    Gros Morne National Park, Canada's most recent addition to the National
    Park family. I have been to this one, and it is great. Don't expect
    many "tourist" type things to do. When I was there in 1988 there was
    only one bank machine on the island. It was in St.Jhon's (or is it the
    one without the "S") which was only 11 hours away by motorcycle. I went
    to the bank the next day during business hours. If you make it there,
    be sure to check out the "fiord ponds", and red mountains.

737.3Newfoundland - great place to visitKAOOA::MACLELLANthe_moose_is_loose_in_hullWed Sep 01 1993 12:4224
    make certain you make reservations for the ferry from North Sydney to
    Newfoundland. You cannot get from PEI direct to Newfoundland.

    Marine Atlantic is the company, and I believe they have a 1-800 number
    for you to call for reservations.

    If you go to St.John's, the downtown was 'pub heavan' at one time (I
    haven't been there is 3 years) There at one time was something like 60
    pubs in downtown St.John's. St.John's is a great little city and you'll
    have a lot of fun. Not sure how the downturn in the fisheries has
    affected it though. When in Newfoundland, try the local beers - some of
    them are pretty good. As well, get yourself "Screeched in" if you can.

    PEI is rather laid back, and it's only 120 miles long. Great for
    driving a motorcycle on. You'll be going at a time when a lot of the
    tourist traps are just beginning to wind down for the summer too.
    There use to be a great Irish pub in Charlottetown - can't remember the
    name though.

    You should have a good time.

     Never been on the Ferry's up north but I "trip" with my scoot to
     South Nova Scotia at least once a year...biggest thing to verify
     on the ferry to Novi is make sure the scoot is braced or tied up
     securely and that there are no overhead leaks..other wise insist
     they park you elsewhere. Most biking in the maritimes is a pure
     delight....no cagers trying to deal yoi in to their mental problems.

     let me know if you plan to go south to Novi.
