| Same thing in basketball. A ref is not as likely to call a foul in the
last quarter of a close game.
Seems to me when a ref calls every infraction, it slows the game down
and ruins it for the fans. Would you rather have a game like game 2
when Koharski called everything?

>>Would you rather have a game like game 2 when Koharski called everything?
The "problem" with that game was that the players were not in tune to
how that particular game was being "officiated".
If every time you held another players stick and prevented his free
movement on the ice a penalty was called, how long do you think this
interference would continue? Consistancy is the issue. Call what you
like, but call it the same all game, every game. If the players are too
stupid to learn the rules, get new players.
How many times have I heard about the "Refs" marble rule. "At the end of
the game they want to have the same number of marbles (penalties) in each
pocket (for each team)" These guys are just doing what they are told
so don't think I am picking on the Refs.
I just think that the players should decide the outcome of the game, if
that includes hauling down a player in overtime, it should also include
a penalty for that infraction in overtime. I don't believe that
ignoring peanalties in overtime is letting the players decide the game.
I saw one game this year where one team was "cheating" and the other
team never caught on that the "Ref" wasn't going to call a thing. The
team that didn't cheat, LOST. What kind of "sport" is this that rewards
cheating ?
One that has lousy officiating, thats what kind of sport it is.

| The stupid thing in hockey is; there are three refeeres, only one can
give out penalties. A line judge can see an infraction yet it doesn't
count if the ref didn't see it with his own eyes, this is kind of like
WWF in nature.
Jean
Of course all this is poppycock unless the Canadiens are favored.

| Actually, the linesmen can call certain penalties - Too Many Men is one
for sure and I think they can call others where it looks like one
player is attempting to injure another.

Another stupid thing about Hockey "Refs". If I poke your eye out the
line judge can call it, if it just ruins a scoring chance, they can't.
Even when the "Ref" does see it, they often do nothing about it. I was
thinking of comparing it to the WWF, but I didn't want to insult that
fine professional sports institution. (at least there you know it is
supposed to be poorly officiated).

| Can't disagree with you Derek. It seems to be the consensus among
people in the hockey notes file that the referees just let everything
go in overtime. A player getting a penalty in overtime definitely
has an effect on the outcome of the game and referees should be as
diligent in overtime as they would be in regular time. It would
certainly mean that Ots wouldn't last as long either.

| I am surprised no one has brought up that Don Cherry thinks the status
quo is fine. Is he too discredited to be used as a source any more ?
I mean it is a Hockey type of issue.
